Along Comes an Englishman

On a bench with an estuary view,
we watch the passage of noonday slips,
enjoying fish and chips.
A stranger arrives,
sits next to Mom,
speaks to her.

Between birds and marketplace buzz,
sounds begin to interlace,
I can’t hear the mysterious dialogue.
A shadow startles me,
a hand extends, the stranger
introduces himself.
I recognize his face,
he’s in the hotel room next to mine.
I know this because
earlier I had knocked on his door,
thinking it was Mom’s room.

Would I care to join him later
to fish for Conger Eel?
Mother had given the date her blessing.
Caught off-guard, I say yes,
hoping I’d misunderstood.
Conger Eel fishing?

At six o’clock, a knock on my door,
I wonder if he had been listening,
water glass to the wall.

High winds had canceled our tour,
my date stands there, unsure of himself.
His eyes are kind,
Atlantic green.
I suggest a walk, dinner
and perhaps a pint.

Wandering into a busy pub,
plenty of time to talk,
he spouts misconceptions
about American women.
I put my hand up,
explain that we aren’t
all easy gold diggers.

He sits back, surprised,
even chastised, then laughs.
The ice now broken,
we thaw into something warmer.

The bill arrives, I insist on going Dutch.

Later, we drive to Land’s End
speak of life in England,
kisses tinged with regrets
that we would never know more.

How beautiful to be able to read and heal as I read another's words, words
from a beautiful Irish lady who writes from her heart.

Sometimes the experience of a few brief moments can offer a lifetime of satisfaction... Sounds like one of those times... Nicely done, Corinne..

Waft every crest upon your destined sea.
Embrace the Wave of Serendipity,
Lest its elusive arcane ecstasy
Refurl with sail for all eternity.

I have to agree with Nan. . .sometimes, all we need is a moment. . .
