With scissors made for little hands,
And wintergreen smelling paste,
Construction paper and doilies,
And a pencil so he could erase;
He was ready for this important task,
And he knew what he wanted to do,
He'd work till he got it perfect,
This gift, for you know who.
Sitting there in his flannel shirt,
And after a few false starts,
He took those tiny scissors,
And made some perfect hearts.
Those little hands grabbed a doily,
Then dove into the jar of paste,
And with a tiny finger,
He stuck each heart in place.
Lastly he took the pencil,
And printed his words with care,
A couple of letters backwards,
And a kiss he'd drawn on there;
He shyly came and sat on my lap,
And gave me this valentine,
Which simply read "I Love You,"
"Mom, will you be mine?"
And with tears shining in my eyes,
My heartstrings felt the tug,
From the words of my little buddy,
I read a five year olds hug.

Oh Bonnie - it takes me back - way back, and those Valentines are in my suitcases of memories....so very precious. Thank you for this gem - so lovingly written and shared!
