A Place of My Own For long years I dreamed that- I’d have me a place of my own. A few head of cattle- A cabin that I could call home. While working long hours,from “can see, to cain’t”, My dreams helped me get through the day- It’s hard to save money for building a spread- On “a hundred a week” rider’s pay. So one day I entered the saddle bronc riding- At a nearby, small-town rodeo... I won first money, ambition was kindled- So on to the next did I go. Soon I was winnin’, some said God was blessin’ I think that Old Nick had a hand- Gone was the peace of mind, ranch work had give me... I now was a rodeo man. Drivin’ long hours, hard falls, and the bruises- Big money was coming my way... Girls by the dozens, to polish our buckles... Forgotten the very next day. Drinking was common, and pills for the drive- Are all things that lead to a fall. My talent fell victim to years of loose livin’- And hearin’ the rodeo’s call. So, what am I saying, to all who will listen? It’s quit while you can, and go home- Fame is so fleeting, the cost so misleading... So stay where you are, don’t you roam. I guess I succeeded, I got what I asked for- A place that I really belong- Out back of the feedlot, a shed for hay storage, And in it.... a bed of my own. |
