First you need a lease and empty need,
a poem, some music and your latest clips.
When god comes from the sky, ask “How’s yr head?”
If he loves you, he’ll respond in kind.

If you desire tenderness, you will be hurt.
You’ll have to go through a door marked “Soon.”
There, you will receive only the finest
in chewable panacea: headache medicine.

If your hands feel cold, you’re doing fine.
Say “There is nothing that makes me feel alive.”
The best part of being smart, you see,
is knowing when to fall apart.

Now add “What happened to the love and happiness I deserve?”
Memorize that line over a week’s time.
You can sing it as a lullaby
as The Night You Were Afraid to Die.

Excerpt:
We take exception to this rule,
except when it is accepted.
The angels are far away.

I find making lists helps.
Write out names of people you’ve read about.
Failing that, write out the word sand
until it turns to and.

Excerpt:
I scraped an angel off my windshield.
It was holding a number in its hand.
I promptly forgot as I got back on the freeway.

When the waiting is over, you can never go back to the first time.
That’s what longevity promises. Repeat with me.
When the waiting is over, you can never go back to the first time,
but you can imagine and elaborate to make it seem so.

Quick test:
God has abandoned you. What song do you sing?
No. You must chase your music with medication
from the door marked “Soon.”

Can’t see their faces?
“But my girl’s face is a fully realized miracle!” you once thought.
Remember, it’s what you are not doing
that keeps you alive indefinitely.

This is a powerful poem, I read it several times.  From my own personal experience and opinion (and this is just an opinion) I have found that it is because God didn't abandon me that I am still alive.  Thank you for writing this.

where WAS I? Mike, I truly love this--as always you write edgy and in a provocative format. I wish I had your originality! Pure excellence in this piece...sorry that it took me so long to find it!
