a matter of belief

"you…
are all I want,"
he said
and she believed, oh
she believed

until the night
she walked the floors
she believed
until he came in
through that door
she believed
until she said
"tell me the truth,"

and with the slamming
of the door
she believed in
never more…

time and time went on
and passed
and she gave in again
to a thought of
believing in together
and the idea that
she could believe
sprang forth again,
~ reaching, reaching ~
for the light
and she believed
in the light
but more this time
she believed
that she wouldn't
crumble if there should be
another reason to
not believe

and as the shattering took
place around her
feet once more,
she didn't criticize herself
(as that had already been done)
but instead she began
to believe in herself
and in the thought
that He created
her for a reason
and for a season
and as a gift for someone
so she believed in that…

that she would be a gift…
to someone

she hasn't been totally unwrapped
yet…

but someday…
one day…
someone will see a package
~ who knows what color the wrapping
will be… ~
a shroud of black to mourn?
a dress of responsibility worn?
independence wrapped in green?
perhaps in the white of light…

and there will be a slender ribbon
that with a tug
or a pull
of love
will let loose the gifts within
for everyone is someone's gift
and no one should ever
look the horse in the
mouth

but be grateful
for the wrappings of the package
if it comes into your hands…

and then share in
a belief…

that dreams can come true…
and that you can get what you wish for…

so here is the key…
believe…

To be a gift and received with care and respect is a gift in itself!!!  Thank you for this.

My eyes glanced up and down at this wondrous peice of art. Comparing this woman to a gift is very intriguing. You made me really think hard about this. I thank you for your expertise.

to take a phrase from DP: "you're an awesome writer, ms. K"
(and I was hit hard too) - some transitions in some relationships are irreversable - and it is sad that that is too often true

Thank you all for your kind responses....in the past few months I've tried to delve into various poetic forms....

I think for a while I'll stick with rambling free verse with a touch of lesson attached...

again....many smiles at the many responses....thank you all....

Oh, *sigh*... Karilea, read this through and felt myself gripping, then warming, and felt this little strike right throuhg my center 'bout a dozen times. As one who is in the process of being unwrapped, I have to say I understand this in it's need, by reflection, and in it's hope, finally, by understanding. Beautiful, lady, thank you!

Oh, Karilea, you have no idea how this poem so perfectly reflects exactly where I am at this moment in time...it's as if our poetic hearts had a momentary conjoining ...His Will be done! We are a precious gift not to be given lightly but only to one who belives as we do...  Love, Ellie
