From the Dark of the Moon
Virginia Salter

from the dark of the moon come I
in the night to travel as spy
deep into the forest glade land I
in a ship of silence did glide

the vacuum portal unlocks
I pull up my gravity socks
step forward onto the dock
checking terrestrial clock

from there a strange eerie glow
in the east begins to show
stepping forward bravely go I
a mission of knowledge comply

my ship so far from me now
yet compass will show me just how
to return to the safety of can
should I meat with a demon’s rough hand

there! at my feet a dark creature
indiscriminate is every feature
I run at a cowardly pace
to save what is left of my face

it follows so closely behind
I think that I’m losing my mind
into my ship I do fly
closing the portal I sigh

to my guide I race in a hurry
the demon no longer a-scurry
there on the screen I do find
the creature that threatened my mind

a shadow of dark from the light
‘s what led me into a fright
it follows wherever one goes
attached to the strongest of foes

a sigh of relief, though embarrassed,
I love the ship safety’s caress
from one who’s known only the dark
the light creates creatures that spark

fear of unsurmountable power
sending the bravest to cower
within what one is aware
and stay for a lifetime, right there!

VAS, this is a scarry short story! I've wondered what went on when "you" other beings come to earth.  This was a fun poem to read.  ME
Was it a shadow you were running from?

Yes, I got the idea yesterday that it would be fun to write a sci-fi fantasy of a being from a dark planet or a place absent of light, that had never seen it's shadow.  Then to put it in a picture book with fantastic illustrations.
My thinking is, though the shadow was there, the children reading would not know what was chasing the being because shadows are so normal to them.  Then at the end have a good laugh that that's what had frightened the extra-terrestial.  Glad you liked it!

I think maybe I heard the song, "Me and My Shadow" yesterday or Friday.

Thanks, Robert and ethome.  No, no hidden meaning.  I just wanted to write a narrative poem about a creature coming from a dark planet/world coming to Earth and seeing its shadow for the first time.  I thought it would be a new way to do a "Me and My Shadow" poem.  I see it as a picture book story.
