Shadows Of Despair

Fire burning deep...the eyes of tradition hold true
Leaving the burdens of history...painted in the soil
Yellow haze of sorrow...gives way to morning blue
Weeping for the sadness...of forgotten legend's toil

Once proud as a nation...in combined forces of life
Spirits shrill to the music...dancing in their blood
Forces of neglect...raining on the measure of strife
Seeking out the innocence...to surge within a flood

Bloodlines forever lost...as desires refuse to wait
Freedom taken from birth...locked away in fright
Ancestory spoiled...as white man battles his hate
Tradition bowing to death...escaping in the night

Shadows of despair...swallow the native tongue
Praise of nature shaken...taken from the dream
Songs of morning hunt...no longer being sung
Pride of this nation...shall reign again supreme

Faith walking once more...with all battles fought
Breathing life anew...to the promise of this land
Spirits rise to challenge...swirl within a thought
Native blood still flows...within a grain of sand

Dreams arrive once more...singing in the breeze
Resting on a wing...in the eagle's maiden flight
Peace resides once more...in shadows of the trees
As dreams come to life...in the taking of the night

Mark this is wonderful!! I'm putting it in my library but would like to ask permission to use it in an upcoming issue of the newsletter that will focus on nature-related poetry. I think this would fit! Thanks.

I'd have to agree with PdV, except....this goes beyond nature and into the heart of humanity itself...

speaks greatly, Sir, of the conflicts that rage within, not only of one nation, but of many nations, for all of mankind....

I am overwhelmed by this....not at all what the title led me to think when I first turned the page to read....

Mark, please, continue to out-do you....

This is a beauty Mark...you weave it like no
other can...and as long as you continue to
write it....I'll continue to feel the verse
that you spin~

Oh Mark, this is phenomenal! Marge will appreciate and adore this. I completely agree with Holly, you weave tales/universal truths like few others can.  You're the best of the best, my friend.  Into the library this goes...

Take care,
Melissa

Poet deVine-Being that I believe that Native Americans have always been closer to understanding and appreciating nature I am honored to say yes to the news letter and I am humbled greatly that you would put one of mine in your library.  Thank you.

Sunshine-Thank you much and you got it exactly but I knew you would anyway.  I will continue to write as long as I have at least ONE person reading so I think for now it is safe to say that I will continue.

Holly-With a promise like that how could I decline.  Thank you so much my dear friend.

Melissa-Don't you dare ever leave Passions.  You mean too much to the egos around here and especially mine.  I do thank you for your ever kind replies.  They mean the world to me and you know I am honored to be in your library.

Bonnie-Thank you so very much.  I am glad you found the beauty in it.

Martie-SHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhh..........don't let that get out my friend.  Could ruin some very interesting moments in here.   Thank you so much for your sweet friendships.  Hugs to you my friend.

Deb-Thank you so much.  I am glad you found this one a good write.

Mark, this is very deep and thoughtful, and as always, I enjoyed much.

"Dreams arrive once more...singing in the breeze
Resting on a wing...in the eagle's maiden flight
Peace resides once more...in shadows of the trees
As dreams come to life...in the taking of the night"

That stanza spoke to me even more so than the rest.

For a man writing with a pen in one hand and a shotgun in the other, you do mighty fine work. No amount of poetry on this subject can ever erase the injustices that were perpetrated but it needs to be written about. This is excellent work, Mark.

snowpants-Yes faith is very vital to life.  Thank you so much for you kindness and I am glad you enjoy the images.

Coco-If you find any inspiration in my words then I am truely honored.  Thank you so much for your undaunted friendship and kindness.

Marge-The footprints I leave are mere shadows compared to the impressions you leave but I will keep strectching until I at least make it to the 2nd plateau.

Sandra-Thank you so much my friend and that is one of my favorite verses in this one too.  I normally don't read my poetry until way after I write it but this one holds special meaning.

JM-Yeah......Lord forbid that we do anymore rubbing off on each other.  We might have to invest in that asbestos wing factory they built up north.   Thank you so much for always encouraging me to try just a little harder and hopefully one day my poetry will be of your liking. (don't say it puddle puff)  Love ya my friend.

Balladeer-You are so right my friend and I am trying to learn as much as I can and then pass it on to my poetry.  We will have to see where it takes us.  Don't worry about my having to set down my shotgun.....I do pretty well writing with my toes now a days.   Thank you kind sir.  It is always nice to share a sagebrush with you.

karilea-So I guess that means that I should invest in futures then!  Thank you for the second visit.

Gale-There is always hope as long as you don't give up on your dreams.  Thank you so much.

suthern- So, let me get this straight.......you want me to keep my boots on????   Thanks for the smile and the second visit.  Always my pleasure to see you here.

Powerful words Mark!  And very convincing imagery.  I have to say this: This world would be in debt without a poet like you walking its barren lands.

Great work indeed!!
