football practice
Virginia Salter

run to the right
run to the left
lunge down the middle
do your best!

coach barking orders
to his team
players moving
as a dream

over the fence
held at bay
a big black cur
barks away

"get that ball
use your clout
get that ball
I can’t get out"

barks from east
barks from west
no time to dawdle
no time to rest

adolescents
in their play
do the bidding
of coach’s say

some legs move
in stallion’s pride
others as
a turtle’s ride

wonder who
will make first string
who will hear
harsh words’ sting

I always feel bad for the kids who are always getting 'barked' at. It must be very demoralizing, especially at that age. Good poem, Virginia!

Ooh, I think they were okay with it.  Coach's gotta be heard and it's harder when outdoors.  It was really kind of comical as I walked past.  The coach was barking rhythmic counting and directions on one side, the dog was barking on the other side from over the fence.  It was like, you kids get after that ball, I can't get out to chase it.

Glad you liked the poem.  Super Bowl's coming, if you're into to that thing.  I like the party part, snack, snack, snack, nosh, nosh, nosh. ;o}
