I sized you up and seized up.
You always warned me
you were capable of great destruction.
But I was built in 1976
to post-irony and –cynicism codes.
Retrofitted in 1999
after all my windows were broken.
Sure, you could shake me,
but I wouldn’t let you displace me.

The horizontal motions were fine;
really we were only dragging over the same places,
only a little more wear to show.
But you kept reaching beyond your limit;
pushed too hard, as if you could create a mountain
out of will alone.

The supports buckled --
the soft bottom floor was crushed,
not that my confidence really mattered.

It was as you’d promised:
you made a lot of noise
and wrecked my stuff.
But, even as you shook me again,
the sunset was a saving borealis
from all the unsettled dust.

And sometimes, when I’m feeling
particularly insane and red-tagged,
I decide I miss my blind fault thrust.

The poor death of routine
as I search for my shoes and a flashlight.

Mr. Magoo,
Um, actually it's comparing a bad relationship to an earthquake, but thanks for playing!
