The Sparrow

Surrounded by an eerie, mystic mist,
Alone and lost in desolation mired,
The wretched weight of sorrows still persist
And desperation reigns by sin inspired.
Upon a twisted path of jagged stone,
As chiseled by an errant life of pain,
I wander toward a feared and dark unknown
On bloodied feet that leave a crimson stain.
Why self inflict such tortures every day
And wrestle with the demons of despair?
Please grant the sweet relief for which I pray
From life so grown devoid of hope and care.
With hope then dies the will to carry on
And brings a bleak but welcome final dawn.
II
But comes with dawn a melody that taunts
And seems to mock a situation dire.
How eerily it echoes as it haunts
A heart so drained and emptied of desire.
Before me does a sparrow sing her song
Upon a leafless limb of dying oak,
And slowly does my heart begin to long
To free itself from guilt's oppressive yoke.
She sings a song of magical rebirth,
A song that sadly fades, too often spurned,
Her message but to seek the inner worth
That must be claimed for love to be returned.
And as her message reaches deep within,
So grows the need to laugh and love again.
III
As loving sounds caress these tortured ears,
She draws me to the comfort of her breast,
To dissipate the agony of fears
And grant a worn and weary man his rest.
And here within the warmth of her embrace
I find my greatest hopes and dreams fulfilled,
For longing eyes when lifted to her face,
Could never be more intimately thrilled.
My sparrow sang, and as she sang, transformed,
To stand a wondrous, lustrous maiden fair,
While in her arms my icy heart is warmed
And freed to ever feel and love and share.
Two yearning hearts together form a whole,
And so my sparrow complements my soul.

Good one...er...three, that is.  From lonesome to loved . . .   Nice work, david.
Has an old, mythical sense to it somehow.  Like it better every time I read it

David...

What a triumphant return entry! You have been away much too long. I LOVE the sonnet form anyway, but your sonnets touch me like few other poets have done...It is great to see you posting here again.  Looking forward to more works from you...

Best,
Emma
