(V1.)
Trying to touch your body
through a computer screen
Your picture reminding me
of the ways we touched before
No matter how clear the image
My hands can't cross the distance between

(Chorus)
No matter how close you say we are
You'll always be too far away
Memories of yesterday
No matter how beautiful they are
Won't bring you back today

(V2.)
Trying to touch your heart
through a telephone line
Your voice reminding me
of the things we said before
No matter what I hear you tell me
The sounds in my ear aren't mine

(V3.)
Trying to touch your mind
through words on a page
Your letters reminding me
of the things we wrote before
No matter how new the paper
The postmark is from a different age

(Fin.)
Trying to touch your soul
but it doesn't matter...

lol jinx...I just responded to your poem about reminiscing about lovers past. Thanks... and you're right, it does matter and I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. It's just a little difficult to be faced with them in person again after believing that they would only be found in my mind.

Jeff, it does matter when someone touches your soul.  Not just in the here and now, but always.  There aren't many that I've loved in my life, but I'm thankful to count you as one of them.

Take me as I am or watch me as I go

*sigh*. . .

I would say that it doesn't matter. . . the memories are nice and all. . . but they only serve to remind you of something that you don't have anymore. . .

excellent poem, Jeff. . .

Sven,

Exactly! I try very hard to say to myself (as Tara suggested) - "better to have loved than to not have loved at all" (who said that, by the way?... anyone?) But oftentimes the memories only prolong the depressing realization that the heart that you once touched won't be yours to touch again. Sorry if that sounds depressing but knowing that I can't have that which I love is a difficult pill to swallow.

Tara,

You know what you mean to me and I am very thankful for the time that we had together. Like you, I have loved very few people. The difference between you and I though, is that I cannot understand why the few that I chose to love have ended up being the ones that I've lost. On that note, I should probably throw in a disclaimer here... I wrote this poem after several frustrating conversations with a young woman named Deneane whom after a 10 year absence since our failed relationship decided to contact me again. It's difficult to listen to someone tell you how much they still love you and regret that they left you and then turn around and say "Oh well, I've remarried and he treats me good... so too bad!"

My apologies to the forum for my long winded response  )

excellent writing..! know this feeling... you said it well... i admire an honest poet who speaks true feelings and from your comments, it is clear this one came from your heart... enjoyed reading and will look for more

and... another thought... sometimes sincerity can't take anybody back to the past but "i wish i didn'ts" might be true but hard to change... reality sux sometimes... love is love and can last through many changes...it's just the accepting of what it is that's hard...

Jeff, I've loved many, and lost many. Love is different as time goes on. I can relate to you though. I have to say that I agree with Sven here...like pictures you take to sit and look at when you don't have those times anymore. But you always keep the hope and someone else always comes along.

doreen,

Thanks for your kind words. Writing this poem was occasionally difficult but coming from the heart it was also therapeutic. I'm not upset that she still thinks so fondly of me after all these years and I am touched that she said the things she did. But when faced with the unchangeable reality..the here and now.. I would almost prefer that she not be so eager to reminisce. Like you said..reality sux sometimes. Glad you liked the poem.

passing shadows,
Its a irresistable self torture to pull out those mental pictures and look at them. Especially when someone gives you new "pictures" to add to the mix. I am hopeful that I will find happiness again, I'm just skeptical about the whole relationship shebang. Thanks for the encouraging words. Hugz - Jeff

Just had to come back to this one Jeff. . . it is hard to admit that you'll never make them happy again. . . especially when they do add new "pictures" as you said. . . when it looks like you've been replaced so quickly. . . you wonder if they ever really loved you. . . you know?

But, eventually the feelings do fade. . . except for that one part. . . that always stays there. . . the one part that you wish you could let go of. . . but you can't. . . that you wish you could lock away and not feel. . . and that's the hard part. . .

Sorry. . . just my own thoughts from my own life experiences. . . which are far too real to me somedays. . .

Sven,

Thanks for returning. I enjoy your responses because you always seem to know so well what I am going through and saying with my poetry. Regarding what you said, it is hard feeling "replaced", especially when it appears that the one who has replaced you is nothing at all like you. It makes you second guess the whole relationship. I know that you can love more than one person in your life but to go from one extreme to the next and still claim that you're happy is something I find difficult to swallow.

Paula,

I'm glad you're here for me; it means a lot. Hugs back at ya babe!  )
