They knew when they met they were not quite the same
They cursed Mother Nature and gave her the blame,
But a love burned within
The expanse of their skin
And they vowed they could win,
Overcoming all that ....
Though he, yes, he was a dog, you see
And she was a fluffy cat.

So he tried to learn how to purr
And she tried to learn how to bark
And she tried to learn how to bury a bone
While he tried to see in the dark
And their method of mating
Was SO devastating
Forever creating
An unending spat .... -
For he, yes, he was a dog, you see
And she was a fluffy cat.

There are rules, it is known, that are written
By the movement of Destiny's pen,
That apply to all puppies and kittens
As well as some women and men,
And, ignoring these laws
Bring out dangerous flaws,
Often fatal because
It's an unbending fact ......

That an eagle can't swim
And a whale can't fly
And we can't change our natures,
As hard as we try,
A dog is a dog and a cat is a cat .....
And that's all there is to that.

A little different in format from your normal posts, but still engaging, readable and very well written.

Thanks for the chance to read and reply

Yes, I admit your general rule. That every poet is a fool:
But I myself may serve to show it. That every fool is not a poet.

I don't know which is more pathetic...thinking we can change for the one we believe we love, or trying to change the one we love...

ROTFLMAO

This was great!  I needed this!  Thanks, 'Deer, for shedding some light on a daily mystery!  What is, is!

'Deer love, did I miss this first time round? Well. I must have done because I don't remember it and I surely would have, it is utterly wonderful. Yes I love it, and of course I was destined to do so, it is truly fabulous. And don't say I always say that, I might but only if it is. And this is!! This goes into my library, and providing I'm lucky I'll be able to read it when I need the soft smile this brought.
Take care

I really do love it

True indeed and that is that!  Well expressed, I just love all of your poems, they always leave me with insight or remind me of something that I forgot long ago

Take care,

Smooth as always m'deer...and as always, I admire the construction..but question the context here...I always thought changing our nature was the point. As always, you make me think...

Well, I know this poem wasn't meant to be this way, but it seems as if I've swallowed some bitter and hard truth. *sigh* We can dream of changing can't we?

Can I be your willful breeze,

kitty cats are kitty cats
soft fur and a meow
siamese, longhair or short,
soft creatures knowing how
to cuddle up and give their love
when treated very kind.
kittens are a treasure
and a special sort of find!
dogs are also special
when companionship they bring --
and i like it very much
when soothing barks can sing.
both can get along quite well
if barks don't turn to bites.
kitties will not scratch or hiss
if they are treated right.
there are many animals
and all are god-created.
all can live in peace and love
although they're not related.

(thank you for this poem! it's wonderful! you have inspired me to write this little ditty and i hope that was ok.... being a feline of the feminine kind, your metaphor hit hard and look what happened?.... POETRY!!!     .... thank you, my 'deer poet!)

At last someone explains Long John's kitty kicking ways... frustration from wanting to be one! *G* Thanks for the smiles that so subtly deliver the wisdom. *S*
