A Single Tear

His labored hours are over now
And joy consumes his face somehow
No smile or glimmer in his eye
But just contentment’s subtle sigh

In falling shadows of the day
His mouth turned up in pensive play
He sits and eats a hearty stew
Then lights the embered logs anew

This is his time to sit alone
And ponder things to us unknown
His handsome face to be admired
A silhouette against the fire

But there he sits in deepest glare
Aroused by only fire’s flare
And only he and God know why
The world seems captured in his eye

He strokes his beard as though a thought
From deepest notion has been wrought
His mellowed brow reveals his age
Not old, just weathered by life’s stage

How can such loneliness bring joy
That look of child with fondest toy
Alone with books that gratify
And only he and God know why

Together in the dancing light
Just he and books and God and night
Amidst his own surround of wealth
He takes a paper from the shelf

In flickering  glow of fireplace
A single tear rolls down his face
He holds his pen endearingly
And writes a poem just for me

Great poem, Elizabeth!  What a wise man that can be content with just sitting at home and doing nothing but writing and reflecting!  Enjoyed this!

"And writes a poem just for me"

He wrote for the one who deserved it so well.

I would want to believe I know
this paragon who stole your show
this man who strokes his beard of white
and writes of you throughout the night

but things are better left unsaid
while thoughts of you roam through his head...

enjoyed, enjoyed....

If - I were bearded -
If -
Reading your poetry - (Especially the last line) explains his motivation more than adequately

Oh Liz, now this is just penned so exquisitely.  I just love it    Your words were so real, so vivid, I could envision it all.  I love the repetition of "only he and God knows why." It's true we'll never know why God choose some people to see life through a poetic eye.  The last two lines are so touching.

Take care,
Melissa

Elizabeth,

The beard he strokes, thoughts he cloaks
Are deep within a soul he sweeps.
And he evokes a master stroke
To keep the essence of his reap.

A lovely, lovely poem. Love Sy
