(my grandfather and his brothers use to get together and play music and sing and act fool..it was a great time..  papaw died in '96..that was the day the music died...in my heart..was thinking about him..as another of his brothers just recently passed away..)

TO THE LEADER OF THE BAND..

he stopped for a moment
and turned--
clutching his song
     to his chest.
he took a last look
at the faces
of those he had loved...
then without a word
he lay his banjo at out feet.
gently, he ran his fingers
across each string--
an echo of the man...

YOUR SONG IS IN MY SOUL...
9-26-96

----------------------------------------------------

i couldnt move.
remembering...
the heat embraced me
the ache took my breath.
there on that day
there were no words to speak
as my eyes took in the space
my mind threw pictures
     at my heart--
reality and memories
shattered, leaving slivers
     to wound me.
such pain to suffer,
yet i could not cry out.
so many tears had i wept,
still they were endless
...and there was silence.
i could hear the music
     in my head--
          only
in my head.
i couldnt move.
remembering...

Wonderful how the people we love leave their own special music with us.  His music will never die as long as you remember it.

Simply beautiful, DG. Simply Beautiful. The music has not died in your heart or soul, my friend, or you would not have such memories, nor be able to express them this way.

Peace to you...

PARKER..you were looking for me...    thank you much for your reply love..the music was amazing....   wish i could share it with you..

SEA..thank you friend for sharing the pain with me..if even for a moment, you shed my tears for me..

MAR..there are only a few ameteur cassettes of their music around..but when i hear them..i cant listen too long..i break down and cry...    if i knew how, i'd pipe it into this thread for all to hear

TRACIE..love the hugs!  thank you for lending yours

SUNSHINE..many thanks for your words..    i often think of that vince gill song.."go rest high"...know that one?  thats what i like to imagine sometimes--papaw and his brothers making their own homegrown brand of music to keep the angels hoppin!  lol

JWESLEY..i thank you much for beautiful..he was a "beautiful" man..deserved the best that i could create...

LL..thank you for listening    and for hearing...glad you enjoyed the music...

MARGE..we all play our own instruments dont we..    i guess my pen is mine..and these are just a couple of my love letters to a wonderful man..

this first poem i put in his local newspaper..family members were not aware i was dong so, til they found it there..the second i wrote after visiting his grave..and finding myself swept up in the overwhelming silence..sometimes its unbearable..i wish i could hear the music just once more..

papaws banjos now reside with his 3 daughters..it still pains me to hear even the strum of banjo strings..but a pain that brings a smile too.. i didnt know it was possible to miss a single person this much..

many thanks..and hugs..g

the day the music died is a most powerful piece

but the one you wrote right after visiting his grave is a most poignant piece

it is so very amazing to realize how someone can be missed so much...my mother and I often had angry words, I always found myself longing to see a smile spread from her mouth to her eyes, it was such a glorious thing, and to hear her laughter

now, I still do...please just one more time!
yet I know, I would still want one more time.

your pawpaw may be waiting to visit you on the banjo strings, perhaps at the tips of your own fingers

Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful, personally testimonial pieces.

NATE..thank you so much..

MARTIE..i thank you

VAS..your reply touched me so much..i did once try to play papaws banjo..at first it made me cry..wishing i could just tap into some of his life and let him play through me..but then it made me laugh out loud       at the horrible sound i was making with that beautiful mans music maker...! maybe one day i'll learn how to play the banjo..maybe when i'm old..

"the leader of the band is tired..and his eyes are growin' old..but his blood runs through my instrument..and his song is in my soul...my life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man..i'm just a living legeacy to the leader of the band.."  dan fogelberg
