His Hands

She often contemplated the feel of
His hands, and recalled them,
Strong, leathery, and supple.

Scars here, there, a cut to a finger
A bruise on the nail, forever there,
It seemed, like her whole life, in her memory.

She recalled the times the hands
Enveloped hers, so small and reaching
Stretching up to this, his warm, firm grasp.

How those hands could handle anything in life,
how still they became in death.

But they were still his hands, with
The wiriness of age, and mortality
They spoke volumes, very silently.

The times they were involved in holding
On to small chicks, the rabbits they raised,
Picking out eggs from the nests, so sure.

Hammering, sawing, making clean and smooth
The carpentry of his trade and his vocation
And she wondered at the ability of his hands.

They could do anything.

They had touched a silken gown on her wedding day
And silenced the grandchild in their grasp
And never, ever lost touch with humankind.

How those hands could handle anything in life,
how still they became in Death.

In the here and now, she takes the hands extended
and never fails to compare them
To her father's hands, and it will never be the same.

Karilea
If I whisper, will you listen?...
I would rather be silent and write, than speak loudly and be bound.

This is a wonderful way to show a little girl's love and admiration for her father. No one can compare to any part of them.
