Mt. Sunflower

Sirens strike images of flashing red and blue
terror in a young man's eye.
Voices carry over distant traffic:
old men drinking beer on the porch
of some old house in Wichita.
Clocks keep track of unimportant seconds
of the same meal every day,
and cigarettes fill the void of thoughtlessness.

Purple protects me as slumber approaches
to imagine new worlds with faces I've already seen.
Come, sweet dream, I lie somber and waiting
for a notion of strength
and the urge to attempt to successfully fly,
for freedom is a feeling just imagined.

Cowardice drips from your crying eyes, my friend,
No ammount of sorrys will make up for it.
Fuel was gathered to strengthen the flames,
and for this I must think of the waste.
Diamonds were polished for cutting the glass
of the room that divided the yesses and nos.

The decision was made by computer number three
in a basement below a Western Kansas prairie,
where an antelope jumped
                 no--crawled under thre fence,
and didn't quite make it across the highway.

Ten miles north of Sharon Springs, Kansas
Mt. Sunflower waits for my signature.

"freedom is a feeling just imagined" ... that line's a poem within a poem. *S* Well done!
