~Midnight hour engulfs
beauties with sky's ebony
butterflies still dream
the spirit may be broken
yet it's wings can still soar free~

Very pretty.  It's a little hard for me to imagine butterflies flying at night, kinda spooky really.  Would they head for the light as moths do?

To the best of my knowledge, though, you did the tanka perfectly!

Kethry and Sven  - I'm so glad that you enjoyed my message. Thank you

Vas - Thank you for reading this. Actually I meant for the first half of the tanka to be spooky and sullen with the midnight theme, hence the first 2 lines "midnight hour engulfs beauties with sky's ebony. Yes, it is hard to imagine such beautiful winged beauties flying through the night and that is why I chose to use them as a metaphor to show that even through pain there is still hope, and butterflies, like people can still dream trying to find that light even in darkness.  Spirits can not easily be broken.  I'm glad that you mentioned that point.

Take care,
Melissa
