Can’t They?
Virginia Salter

pit in the stomach
when you’re afraid you’ve said one thing too much
one step too far
waiting for the reaction
an eternity of time
feeling small
smaller than a gnat

not knowing
if caring
may be misconstrued as meddling

do you think
that if one feels “Perhaps...?”
then one HAS gone too far?

Like they say
"If you ask yourself,
'Am I in love?'
if you have to ask,
then,
the answer’s 'No.'”

Sick,
sick in the stomach,
spinning thoughts,
eyes close to tears;
how can one grasp those questioned words
pull them back
so the waiting can stop,
for, then,
there would be nothing to await.

But,
but what if they needed to be said
what if it was a mission of ‘tough love?”
Then, what?

Agony,
this waiting’s agony.
Would you pray with me?
Help me find peace,
help the hearer, too,
be at peace,
and if I was bound to utter them,
help the hearer reap their intent.

So many times I’ve been in this place.
Can’t some of them have been a mission given me?
Can’t they?

Thanks, Koko!  The recent event that spawned this piece was one where no real problem was at hand, thankfully.  I just found out that no offense was taken whatsoever.  However, the depth of this piece was certainly deepened by other times when I've said too much.  I really felt it likely a universal problem for many so thought it a good one to take time to write and post as well.

Thanks for reading and your lovely comments and well wishes.  It always helps to have someone care.

Sunny, what a wonderful thing to learn about!  Thank you for that blessing.  Isn't that really what a writer's all about...making a difference with his/her words.

I don't know how many times I've swallowed my words rather than say something that can be misconstrued.

As have I, but not every time.  Can't help but wonder, still, the things I mention in this piece.
