Shifting Winds

Did I see you yesterday
       And the day before
Where will you go tonight
       Does it have a door

A dagger from an icy wind
       Makes you turn your head
Still you stagger right along
I suppose to find a bed

Shedding guilt I just drive on
       Attempting to evade
Any moral obligations
       To offer any aid

How easy it has become
       To pass along the blame
No matter what the illness
       We all bear the shame

Yet here I sit in judgement
       As I wonder why
You would choose cold and hunger
       So you can stay high

A sadness overcame me
       I felt a sudden gloom
I didn’t want to be the sort
       Of person to assume

I turned around to find him
But he was out of sight
Round and round I circled
I had to set things right

And  when I finally found him
       How my heart did beat
A sweaty hand I offered
       On that cold dark street

This man I soon discovered
       Wasn’t unlike me
The only difference in us
Was I still used a key.

**it is estimated that at least 12 million US adults have been homeless at some point in their lives**

Prometheus, this poem sheds light on an issue that is often overlooked by man/womankind...

You have shared with us a write that shall remain timeless and I will thread in2 my library...

I believe the sensitivity of awareness for the homeless situation is one that must be in the forefront each day we awake because it will not go away unless we try to remedy the situation...

Thanks for the incredible read

Very touching way to give us a reminder that these conditions exist and that something has to be done about it....Sudhir is one who writes about this a lot and I praise him for doing so....thanks for sharing...ethome

Sorry to be cliche', but? "there but for the grace of God, go I..."

A sobering, thoughtful write to read, Jamie.

and a shivering reminder during this icy winter.

and had to pop back to say? I thought the title perfect.

Coco, Thanks so much, and yes we must be more sensitive to the plight of others.

Dee, Your welcome, and Thank you.

Sharon, Yes Maam.

Tracie- Thank you as well.

ethome- Yes, and he does a much better job than I.

serenity- Hard not to be cliche when you think of such things, because the cliches are so true. Thanks.

James- thanks for taking the time to read it.

Victoria-- Your are of course correct,, a large number or the homeless are made up of those with some kind of mental illness.

Jamie...it never ceases to amaze me that in this country we can LET this happen...yes I understand that some people do  this to themselves...but as you said...there are times the only difference is a key...how can we tolerate this? No on should be hungry or homeless in this counrty NO ONE...thank you for this Jamie

Paula-- You are so right,, and until we realize we can make a difference one person at a time this travesty will continue to escalate.

Jamie, it is very sad that millions of people are homeless and even more so that some choose to be, not only in the US but all over the world.

and You with your gentle heart have written this so beautifully my friend.
