Squared in a cage with exits at each side,
You grew to treasure shelter and fear freedom.
In need of human warmth, alone you cried,
Repeating to yourself, “I do not need them.”
You thrived on strength, defensive at each word,
And bared your teeth at every passing creature
Intrigued my any movement, you observed
The men behind the bars,-- their every feature.
You’ve learned to speak, to mock a simple phrase,
But thought no higher of yourself than does a clown.
And now that death has slipped into your place,
You clutch the bar and wait, prepared and stout.
Your only move: to sway to every chime,
(Unsteady legs give way to constant drumming)
And gasping, with your beak to hold back time
And with a naked eye, perceive the coming.

To live in a cage is not to live, is it? Excellent writing, Master! So nice to see you again!

we all build up barriers for defense but sometimes they become our prisons. well expressed.

It's in your eyes a fire that's wild and glorious
Unhibited, unfinished in everything I do Let the morning rise like our hearts desire" whipping boy
