(The picture below is the sunset from my front yard)

Only--Could

They could be lions with long necks
looking over the last of the day,
they could be hungry lions.

But no, they are embedded in dirt
with strong rope
and their neck’s sway to wind
in a dance that shakes loose their feathers
and sends them across the yard.
How could they be lions?
They could be eagles with long necks
and feathers ruffled,
They could be eagles.

They rise in a pride
in front of the setting sun
and look at the house with distrust.
I can feel their talons scratch,
see their pointed teeth at ready.
Yes, they could be lion-eagles,
they could.

They are only palm trees
rising in dark silhouette against the setting sun
they are only palm trees
they are
only palm trees
palm trees.

Martie~
Definitely lions !
And I wouldn't want to ruffle their feathers.

You're so imaginative -
It reminded me of the game we play with cloud formations.
Love it, West Coast sis !

Of all the palm trees I've known personally, not a one of them appeared to me as a lion... I wanna go back where it's warm and check this out again... I LOVE this, Martie...

Eagle-lions? Dandy-lions?

"only palm trees?" Martie, there's no such thing as "only palm trees"! Palm trees rule!!!! (and so does your poetry!)

Okay, now I am homesick.  I vote for them being a cone of shaved ice getting ready to be dipped into the sunset of flavors.  Well what do you think I would see with all the snow here.  As always my friend, your poetry shines above all.

Looking out my window - at 4 inches of snow - covering yucca, grass, cars and trees indescriminantly. I think you can easily imagine what your poetry & picture do for me.
btw - I vote for dandelions

I'd be lion if I didn't say this was great...
okay... pretty pathetic... but most anything would be next to your ability to transform your life into such beautiful poetry.

Martie, they look like Lion-Eagles to me, hehehe.  Such a beautiful sunset and scene.

Your poetry is so refreshing my dear
Thank you!

Looks like palm trees to me! Of course being from Florida myself helps a bit... all I dread are the nasty alligators that love to eat dogs and humans, and make themselves welcome in your yard. eeks!!

I don't think they're palm trees I think they're flying lion eagles that have just stopped to rest and gaze into the sunset and wish that someone with a flower girl's imagination would write a beautiful poem about them...and sure enough! it happened! Please don't look out there tommorrow because they will have flown away and you will indeed be sad....or maybe it's just some of the muppets standing there ready to make you laugh in the morning...whatever...you keep it up sweetheart...I enjoyed having fun with this!
