*Gallery Reading Room*

Thanks to Rainbow Girl for the inspiration

the candles are still burning today
they said that they would be all burnt out by now
    we were sure of it
for they had been through a lot
the wax all melted and pooled at the bottom,
wicks not trimmed properly, down to the last
but every night when we left,
sure that they would be gone the next day
they would be there still when we returned,
wax renewed, wicks trimmed and proper
the flames of each burning proud and strong
almost in defiance, as if to say
"we will not die, we will continue"

and every day, we put them through their paces
we used them to light our way
    to shine in the darkness
to give us hope and strength
to warm us when we were cold
to speak to us when we were lonely
to sing to us when we were sad
we would group them together to shine brighter
and they would, as if being together made them stronger

but still, at the end of the day, they would be almost gone
and just before the last of the wick disappeared,
we would be done with them for the day,
and we would blow out the flame
why we didn't throw them away, we had no idea,
they were always there, we knew that they would return
so, we just kept them, knowing that we would be able to use them
    again and again. . .

then came the day that we really needed the candles
we had become lost and cold, lonely and sad more than usual
we hoarded the candles, we used them without care
bonded them together and forced them to do things for us
mattered not that they were not meant to be used in this way
we didn't care,
all we knew was that as long as we blew out the flames
before the wicks disappeared, we would have them still
to use the next day. . .

that's when a cry came from the back of the room,
one of us had used his candle too long
        the wick had gone
                        and all that was left
was a burnt and cold lump of wax
it wouldn't even hold a flame
                        it had died. . .
                                        .  . . we had killed it. . .
and the other candles, as if sensing this, lowered their flames
in respect. . . and in sorrow and mourning. . .
for their lost light. . .

and one by one, they themselves burnt out too. . .
and we cried, and screamed. . .
                                . . . for without the candles
                                      we were nothing
                                      we were lost
                                      we were cold
                                      we were lonely
                                      we were scared

but we could do nothing but look on in horror
as our candles died. . .
. . . for we did not know that as they died,
so too would we die. . .
. . . for the flame that was their life
                              was our life as well
and as they shined,
so too did we shine. . .
as they warmed,
so too did we warm others
as they sang,
so too did we sing to those alone
as they comforted,
so too did we comfort them

this is why they would always be there when we returned
because just as we needed them,
they needed us
they needed us to shine their light to a dark and lonely world
they needed us to warm a cold and icy world
they needed us to sing to a lonely and sad world
they needed us to comfort a frightened and angry world. . .

they needed us

and we used them

and we used the

and we used th

and we used t

and we used

and we use

and we us

and we u

and we

and w

and

and now?

one flame still flickers. . .

and now....
I would make a wish
that they would
burn till eternity
but the thruth
the flame died
suddenly
and today
we had to say
Goodbye.

`thank you for sharing this poem, today I had to say "Goodbye" to my uncle..
he was like a father for me.
reading your words, made me think on his candle.
and  his candle showed us faith, strength and hope....

Wow... this is a magnificant poem. I am literally speechless with this one. I can't tell you how it touched me. Thank you for writing it.

Sven
this poem touched me rare and true
it was a gift from  both of you
a gifted promise out of the blue
a chance to walk in another's shoe

I heard the song, for me to hear
means I let go of something drear
and learned to rise without a fear
Now I ask you, where to from here?

the candle flame is nearly gone
to live your life and sing your song
that which gives light, cannot go on
without reciprocal faith to make it strong

the message in the candle's burn
is everyday we live and learn
we breathe, renew, with each world's turn
but one day there will be no return

Sorry couldn't help it. This poem moved me to tears of joy or otherwise and I had to respond in kind.

Sven, you have lit a candle that burns on in the words that you write.
As long as your poetry can be read I know that flame will always burn bright.

Sven love, how did I miss this beauty, don't tell me I've been misusing my candle. You do and I'll clump you, well, I would if I got the chance. I promise, I'll be good, I always am, aren't I? (Watch the answer kid, I'm getting some lift in my tail   )
You know I love this, of course you do, and I really and truly do. This really is a beauty love. Absolutely divine
