Heart Of The Deer

The arrow flew
straight and true,
the heart of the deer
the magnet drawing it in;
two sudden steps
as the arrow drove home,
and the doe collapsed in the snow;
it's life redly staining
it's final bed of white.
The old,
thin, arthritic warrior,
veteran of thousands of hunts,
battles,
nights of love and dance,
slowly drew the shabby horse-hair blanket
around his shoulders;
slowly, carefully,
placing each foot in turn,
one before the other,
approached the deer,
knelt at it's side,
said a silent prayer of thanks
to his God of the Hunt,
gently stroked the meal
he'd hunted for days, said
"thank you brother deer for sharing your life",
lay across the still warm body,
and joined his ancestors
smiling soulfully
just beyond his sight.

Each gave until they could not give any longer...thank you for sharing this gift...

If I whisper, will you listen?...
I would rather be silent and write, than speak loudly and be bound.
