When Daddy Braided Her Hair

First day of school she’s dressed to perfection
As tears begin to well in Daddy’s eyes
He lavishes her with all his affection
But he doesn’t want her to see him cry
And lovingly, he begins to braid her hair

“Is there really a Doggy Heaven?”
“ And why did Simba have to go?”
Many question when you are only seven
“Yes there is, and now he frolics to and fro
And soothingly, he begins to braid her hair

Finally today she can drive on her own
And smiling he hands her the keys
Now she will never stay at home
As she is as free as the breeze
And proudly, he begins to braid her hair

Sobbing fiercely she leans on his chest
As he holds her like when she was little
He wants her home and she knows it is best
As she is shocked by his bones so brittle
And smiling, he begins to braid her hair

“I know about Granddad, my Daddy told me”
How quickly this three-year-old grew wise
Picking her up, I placed her on my knee
And looking at her I can see his blue eyes
And instinctively, I begin to braid her hair

For Ronald Crossley who passed away on Dec 23 1997.

This is a repost from about 4 months ago.  I wrote it in rememberance of not just to illistrate mine and my Dad's relationship, but because it helped to remind me that love for those who pass on, is never lost or forgotten.

It is a blessing to have wings for words, and passion in pen

Marina, I remember this, and it is as lovely now as it was then. I too remember my father's hands, they are etched in my memory...and in my copper dog...

Yes, that love ever remains and is woven into the plaits of this piece.  What a tender way to show love, what a tender way for you to show your relationship with your dad.  Beautiful, heart-warming piece.  Thanks so very much for sharing it for those of us who did not see the first time.

Very loving and very touching my sweet friend.  You show the beauty of a dad's love and the beauty of your heart in this piece so well.  I can only hope that someday my daughter would remember times with me in this manner.

Marina,
I too remember this. It's as lovely today as it was back then.

This is beautifully done and very touching, Marina. The love is never lost, never, that's true. This brought tears to my eyes.
