He rode atop a buckskin mare,
Stetson hat and vacant stare,
Forty dollars and his found,
Not a soul but him around,
At the line camp past the breaks,
Blizzard's coming, snow's first flakes,
Beans and biscuits at the shack,
First check the herd, then long ride back,
In Horseshoe Canyon, herd's bedded down,
It's been a month, since last seen town,
Bandanna covers weathered face,
Dreams of owning, one's own place,
In distant gully, lost calf bawls,
As warmth of shack, to cowboy calls,
No one would know, or even care,
If rider left, the maverick there,
Into the wind with cold remorse,
The cowboy rides, atop his horse,
Soaking wet and freezing cold,
A cowboy's life is getting old,
But calf is back at mother's teat,
Boots are frozen, to his feet,
As he heads back, in worn out saddle,
On buckskin mare, he is astraddle,
He takes a glance, towards clouded skies,
And sees above, to his surprise,
In break of clouds, a shining star,
A beacon bright, in east afar,
Upon his face, a cowboy's smile,
As nears the shack, rides his last mile,
Says to himself, I do believe,
I plumb forgot, it's Christmas Eve.

thanks for sharing again!
