(Trying to jump start my muse with this already traveled poem)

   Running on Empty

Along the parched road of living
there was a sign that read,
cool mountain stream, first right
at the crossroads then across the bridge.

I had to get out of my reverie
and walk up close to read in small print,
enter at your own risk.

Well, I was torched as you can imagine,
my engine had been running hot
and I could smell the stench
of my own insatiable thirst.

I looked at my gas meter and it read,
running on empty
watch what you do
another dry mile
and you are through.

I knew how to fix that you see,
my reverie was not all I had,
I had a reserve tank of dreaming,
and I had dreamed my way into many a place.

I shifted out of reverie and into dream
and turned right at the crossroads,
and came across some assumptions,
(standing with their hands on hips
in the middle of the road, they were,)
so I closed my eyes and smooth as silk
my dream took me over their stern mouths
and landed me in a meadow,
lupine dotted and poppy spilled.

I could hear the sound of happiness
frolicking in the splash of passion
and I slowed to take a breath
and that was when I saw
my future falling before me,
and turned away.

I gathered my now
around me and fastened it
with the exhale of my intake
and suddenly I was looking out the window
at the middle of the day.

I swear - you'll NEVER be "empty" - and I thank God for that fact - every day!!!

Martie~

On a deserted highway
no place I'd ever been
before

ran into
a little muse
with her thumb
in the air

she was hitching
and naturally *-*ing
(you fill in the blanks)

commiserating the fact
that she had empty tanks

"Just give me a lift
to a fueling station
Martie's waiting
for my inspiration."

I said, "Hop in."
"Anything for a friend."

Now with foot pressed
to the floorboard
she took off and left me
mesmerized !

Toot !  Toot !
Look out in the driveway,
I think she has arrived !

*Ya' just got me grinning, gal !
*Hugs*

Whenever you're running a little empty...
just look for some solar energy!...LOL...

always great!

this is REALLY fun Martie, and dead clever as well.....

this bit particulary made me smile:

"and came across some assumptions,
(standing with their hands on hips
in the middle of the road, they were,)
so I closed my eyes and smooth as silk
my dream took me over their stern mouths"

I can JUST imagine "assumptions" doing that..heh heh ..i mean how DARE they get in the way of the "reality" of a dream ...lol

yes, i like it, and the clever interplay kept my attention right through

HEY  YAY  ...I got to one BEFORE Janet Marie....~grin~

I'd loan ya my jumper cables,
But I sold em, and now they're Mables.

And you write about misplacing your Muse...hehe
wonderful poem Martie, my poetic flower child.

well all I know is I got running on empty
down to an exact science...
can go for days on fumes ...
and as for these moody damn muses of ours..
ya know what...they need either some tough love or some raspberry tea when ever they come dragging in (losing my sense of humor and patience) can ya tell
and LOL at Poetree ...damn I must be losing my touch   but his comment made me laugh,
and thats no small feat today...
very cool poem Martie ...
you know how I love looking at that magic window of yours ...
I hope our muses are having a darn good time and getting well rested..
cuz I intend to work mines moody behind off when she deems to blow back in
later lady
love ya

Some people find subtlety in strangers
if you find anything~let me in
Your eyes~you see everything
my eyes~I see it all together now~and I know

I have been running a little on empty myself. My muse you see, has taken another road and I was left with an empty heart.
Enjoyed this.
