Sidewalk Gray to Sand
©2000 Christopher Ward

as if :
the green-swathed mountain curves were not enough,
-how much beauty can I grasp in one day and not be tainted by
it’s false pretenses? still, she had to frame herself ,
locked inside a sunlit corona of exuberance,
picture-twirling a seductive whirling -
all while whispering ‘sidewalk gray to sand.’
and though winter’s wind breathed chatter-chill,
she raced euphoria and beat it to the western shores of Here,
caressing the beach with naked feet… toes curling,
hair blowing, wisping, floating her to water’s womb.
one to the other, melding flesh and sea,
hope and lips, with the crumbled stone of
dirt and pain, loss and… tears?

so I sat: the stone, the rock, the Adonis.
knees to chin and dripping nose to sky,
I bowed at her feet from atop the crenellated back
of the dunes commiserating with me in the third row.
I, always so fluidly defiant of the sea,
was still taken with this liquid-nymph, seduced by the chains
she drug behind her like steel locks of hair. they crackle across the beach,
promising, threatening the cessation of freedom’s breeze.
but I shrug and say ‘ah hell, I don’t care...’
all I wish is to graze my feet in her path,
to trod Amazing step-for-step, following, following, following.
*laugh*
but she won’t see it or feel me there anyway,
(is that why I feel like some misguided psychopathic cradle-robber,
stalking her touch with a wish-I-were-real-and-not-some-ineffectual-rerun-of-a-one-week-jump-at-the-truth grin on my face?)
but never mind that…
somehow I’ll find the time to shine a lighthouse beacon
through my eyes on a schooner’s course to her decisiveness.
then she can believe… maybe, I hope.

oh look -
spectres in the salty mist have joined her chorus,
their melodic hums melding a roar of acceptance
with the chanting karmic peace.
so smoothly it blinds the wind, echoing empty canyons which mirror me,
reflect the void churning my soul in spiteful black and whites.
and still I ache to blend my voice, to herald little sister to
the coming of her age… of joy. to witness with my lungs
this beauty I ache to taste – saline and sunshine dreams come forth to play.
but voiceless, useless, I charm my eyes with her form
and kiss her laughter with my thoughts and prayers, all
from a distance - seemingly nonexistent up here a few lonely feet away .

and in my hands –
oh if she could only feel the goddess I taste atop her peaks
and smell the fear I breathe each time thoughts see her leaving –
turned to grace each time she stays… and questions.
raze me blue with repetition, challenge a simple blink into obscure
rationales of someone else’s mannerisms and failings, when I have enough of my own.
‘ask me again’ I scream so softly she can’t hear.
‘what?’ she whispers – a tumultuous crest of emotional baggage.
pounce!
if she could climb any closer into my skin,
we wouldn’t be separate viewpoints. aren’t anyway.
not really. this morphing from pain to love scares us still –
jousting smiles with frowns of hesitant glances bent around a corner
of previosity. so we make up words and chew the crust
of chatter, pretending that time is all it takes… time to know, to wait. no –
time is only for justification. we know. you know. I know.
and yeah, time to hear.
but hey – there’s no fear, right? because no matter what you say,
I understand.

I cannot give you any words for this… you heard the tears as I read.

I hate to spoil this, with a reply of my own - I almost feel like I'm poking in upon a private conversation...but

I've never had tact, anyway

And it's in that understanding that we find what we've been seeking. . .

This is the best thing that I've ever seen from you. . . yes, ever. . .

I can only reply to this the same way I did to the poem that evoked this one ...
for like that one did ... this one too takes my words and breath  away....
so again I say DAMN!!!!!!
and yes...you will understand.

PHEW... ok give me a few hours to re catch my breath... I have only given this poem one quick reading and truthfully it is not enough, but from first read I am amazed... damn you for making it look so easy. Going to explore this one in more detail when I get a chance.
