         She colored the numbered picture
            Just as she was told
            Precisely choosing the color
            To match the number
            She took the crayon
            And colored the number
After coloring each and every number
            She took her favorite colors
Filling up the spaces within the picture
            Artfully the kindergarten page
            Came forth in beauty
             From the independent artist within

Following directions she did that first!
Little did the teacher know or see as
She wrote on the paper in red letters
             "You need to follow directions"

OUCH! was my reaction when i first read this...i too think that its a shame that teachers are neither prepared nor confident to let their charges express their creativity and that when those innocent children do, they are criticized for doing so...

good poem...can really relate to the hurt and dismay of this child who only wants to please....

I for one have always found myself adding the little bit of independence in my life as well and it is a shame that this little one had to be criticized for being unique.  There is nothing wrong with that at all and I only hope that the teacher was enlightened of not only HER/HIS failure to follow the directions of guidance and caring but to the beauty of individuality in each of their students.  Thank you for sharing this hearttug of a poem with us.  It really reaches in the emotions and that is the sign of a wonderful write.  Welcome to Passions by the way.  Hope to see more of you works.

SongBird~
BRAVO !
I could hug your neck for this one.
*Hugs*
Sometimes - those who teach - have failed to learn.

Thank goodness those who stifle creativity are in the minority.

I'm such an advocate of creativity -
and a outspoken opponent to those who would stifle it in children.

Is there anything more irritating than someone
giving a child a rainbow - and telling them not to dance upon it ?

I'm inclined to color outside the lines
and encourage it in every child I know.

Thank you - Thank you - Thank you !
I will share this with many tomorrow.

I glad you all thought this was an interesting piece. It was story told to me by a grandmother, who carefully observed her granddaughters kindergarden paper she had brought home.  The teacher had probally failed to notice that the child was following the directions the way she knew how, as after coloring the rest of the spaces in the picture it was not as obvious that she had followed directions. It is obvious the child is a bright creative girl. Children are such interesting people!
