Listening to every heart

The Forever Angel

Snow lay on the December ground, sparkling white with little sound
children came home from far and wide, to spend holiday at parents' side
Christmas glory echoed in the halls, and cheerily to each they called
"Merry Christmas, Mom and Dad, this, the best we have ever had!"

Although it was but Christmas Eve, the house held sounds so merry
children giggled so happily, ersatz tree trimmed in red cranberries
brocaded stockings so large and vast, held by angels in bronze metal cast
and one could view in the scheme, that angels were by large the theme

"Mom, you outdid yourself again!" and the oldest boy smiled merrily
as he glanced around the room to see the handiwork of his mother so free,
ivory white lace covered the tables, and lace graced the angels' wings
"Mom, when Christmas is in your heart, you sure make this place sing!"

The old man watched his wife's sweet face, then pulled her into his embrace
no words were spoken, just a glance, for in their hearts lay their romance
the cheer and gaiety of the room abound, for their children gathered 'round
and mother blushed, dad did too, as she scurried away to fix Christmas stew

and as the children headed for their rooms, the old man went to peek
beneath the laden Christmas tree, some initials he did seek
I.C.I.D. on a large box in red, had kept him puzzled for many days
tenderly he fingered the box, and wondered what in it might lay.

Then to his ears came a sound of distress, he hurried to the dining room
there on the carpet lay his wife, he thought perhaps she'd swooned
he felt for life, he held his breath, but lo, he only saw the face of death
and gathered her in his arms so tight, a moan then rent through the night.

Days followed, solemn and vast, no Christmas for them had come to pass
through the ceremonies he had walked, but little did the old man talk
the children followed the man to his home, to remove all decoration
but father exploded "NO!, leave it all here, in commemoration!"

So the children left their father behind, amid the stockings and gifts
figuring the solace of the beauty would help to heal the frightful rift
that lay now within their father's heart, perhaps the season would impart
some sweet sense of remembrance, some sweet peace to his broken heart.

For many days the man ambled around, solemnly walked over his grounds
and soon the season of winter passed, spring and warmth came with sound
redbirds, orioles by the score, still the ersatz tree stood on the living room floor
and the Christmas gift with I.C.I.D. glowed red under the laden Christmas tree.

I.C.I.D., her message to him, "in case I die" had been her spoken whim
she always had wanted him to know, that if someday she were to go
there would have been a way to believe, that her love would never leave
and the great package labeled I.C.I.D. glowed red under the Christmas tree

Summer swept in, green lawns, blue skies, still the man hadn't cried
and his children now so far away, called often, though he didn't say
what was really on his mind, just answered questions, said he was fine
but the red package labeled I.C.I.D. still glowed under the ersatz tree.

Soon fall swept across the land, still the room was in Christmas grand
and the man walked through his days, and had found in him a way to pray.
He believed in God, and a plan, but all his life, he'd been in command
so deep in thought this fall, one night, he took a stand, stood upright

"God, you took her too soon away from me, my sweet angelic wife, Mary,
soon it will be from a year ago, when last I saw her hair, white of snow
when last I held her in my arms, when last I was able to kiss her charms
and all I really want to know, is that in Your love she still glows."

He finally began to cry, as the season passed on to winter white
and long he dreamed of his Mary, come to him in softest light
her golden voice he could not hear, but in his dreams he held her near
and in the quiet of the night, his vision beheld her in his sight.

The ersatz tree still stood aloft, last year's merry sounds still echoed soft
as the old man came in one morn, took his chair, still feeling forlorn
a year had come, and swept on by, and the red package caught his eye
I.C.I.D., in case I die, the label said, and he slowly shook his head.

He picked up the red package, it's golden bow still on so tight
and amazed was he at the weight, it seemed so very feather-light.
"To my Tom" a second label read, and again he slowly shook his head.
"Ah my Mary, I love you so" and slowly he began to un-do the bow.

Peace descended upon the old man, as a whiff of her perfume arose
and slowly, but so certainly with whim, the smallest smile came to him.
He laid back the paper of red, as he saw the white hair on the head
of the most beautiful angel ever to be, beheld in the face of his sweet Mary.

And from the red box with golden bow, he drew forth an angel, just so
with lacy wings, all dressed in sheen, but his Mary's face looked at him
for she had crafted, with such grace, the whitest hair, the sweetest face
and now forever an Angel would she be, as she graced him with her memory.

Kari, Oh kid, this has made the tears stream down my face this is so utterly beautiful, it is stunning. You have written such a treasure, it really is so outstanding. Beautiful is too simple an expression but this is.
Take care, I'll go and have a good blub in a minute

'Deer, thank you. Several years ago, an event very similar to this occurred, and it was so very sad...this morning I awoke thinking of it, and the words stirred around so that eventually before the light of computer, two pages of gift flew forth...and you found it...thank you...

and thank you Richard...

and Marsha?...when I tried to read this back for meter and such...I too cried, and cried...thank you for sharing your golden tears with me...

There seems to be a mist on my monitor screen making it hard to see the words I type.  guess I will have to get a new monitor ... or a handkerchief.

James, I am sorry if this brought back sad memories, but if we allow time to heal, then yes, indeed, it gets a little easier...we never forget, but we learn to live again...

thank you for reading...

Sunshine,

Beautifully written and filled with ever changing emotions.  You just never know what life will bring.  The ending was perfect.  This one really touched my heart.
