The Key

The church was cold and empty
and all around was dark
and I could see as I walked in
the stained glass of Him,
he wore a crown of light
and was surrounded in color.

The air hummed around me,
in the pointed wooden rafters
I heard breath
and the old creak of joints.

I walked alone down the isle
with flowers held on my shoulder,
down the maroon carpet
past empty pews that sighed
and almost stumbled on the steps
leading to the alter.

I turned in my opening feeling
and looked around,
for this was the house of God
and I was bringing him flowers.

I could hear the cars on the street outside
and I felt that maybe I should be afraid
but I wasn’t, I was glad to be here
just me and some magnificence
and the quiet of some peace that enfolded

and the color came from outside
steaming across in purple and scarlet
canary yellow and cobalt blue,
the color led me back down the stairs
to other places

and I thought how lucky I was to have this key

What a lovely, peaceful scene...I am glad you are the holder of the key...

seems like a little trade of poetic justice...
you brought Him flowers and he gave you the return of divine inspiration
this is such a cool write Martie gator...
serenity from your view and your pen...
to my smile...
see ...now its the gift that keeps on giving.
thanks *smile*

The key you speak of fits more than doors and locks. I loved this poem. Great job.

Today is Sunday - and I'm home - it is 11 Am - I should be standing with the choir as loving friends and I join in raising our voices to Him and my thoughts continue to wander there - Our church is 150 years old - it does 'creak' and it has a warm intimacy - all things I especially felt as I read your words - I have a key - literally and figuratively I know I will be back there soon - but I needed this this morning - thank you very much

I think maybe you were given a bouquet at the same time my friend.  Maybe not one you can see in a vase but definitely one that you can feel and smell in your heart.  Amazing how things work isn't it?  Beautiful my friend and just the perfect way once again to end my session here today.  Hopefully I will be back tonight and find another of yours to go to sleep with, but just in case, I think I will hold onto this one.  Hugs and love to you my dear friend.

This is lovely... both metaphorically and literally. *S* I grew up in the country (okay, the sticks *S*) where no one locks their doors... and was overwhelmed by sadness when I learned that the churches had to be locked in order to be insured... the ones most in need might not know how to find the key.
