Concrete Winter

Concrete,
cracked and broken,
cold,
unforgiving;
holes deep
in the minds of the destitute,
homeless lost souls
circling round and round
in their meager space
praying only to be left alone,
in their misery.
Cold wind blowing softly,
heedless of sparce clothing,
freezing skin,
fading minds;
blue finger tips,
toes unfeeling,
eyes staring,
seeing
but sightless,
watching the blankness
of apathy,
sapping all will,
all desire.
Angels hover near,
faces grim,
hearts broken,
unable to help,
forbidden to leave,
waiting,
waiting,

Death's leering, spectral face
kisses a cheek;
somebody's child
passes beyond;
somewhere a mother's heart
flutters,
she clutches her chest,
oh God, she says,
oh God.
