It happened on a Christmas eve, one night, some years ago,
The ground was frosted over, and the rain had turned to snow.
A howling wind was heard outside, as dusk brought on the night,
The flashing lights across the street showed santa's sled in flight.

It was the time when all who could, did give what they could spare,
They brought good tidings to their friends and showed them that they care.
They even helped the needy, from the homeless to the poor,
It seemed that everyone was loving Christmas time once more.

But yet, this tale reflects on someone different from the rest,
No seasonal hypocrisy would change things for the best.
For somewhere in the summer time, his Mommy went away,
It seems she went to heaven, and there always she will stay.

So now he has a photograph he keeps with him instead,
For God had taken her away while she lay in her bed.
No longer is she there to tell him things will be all right,
No longer lay him down to sleep, and kiss his brow goodnight.

He looks towards the Christmas tree, and stands up from his chair,
Then slowly turns his gaze upon the presents lying there.
There must be more than any other Christmas time before,
Yet all the gifts in all the world could never find a cure.

The only one he wanted was the one that's free to buy,
The one that means the most and is the easiest to try.
No more her arms to hold him on a cold and scary night,
No more the words " I love you" as she squeezes him so tight.

The clock creeps into night as he is taken up to bed,
He tries to brave a smile and be as strong as Daddy said.
But as the door is closed and he is leaving down the hall,
He pulls the covers closer, as the tears begin to fall.

With hands clasped tight, he says a prayer, a whisper barely heard,
Such innocent emotion was behind his every word.
He asked that God watch over him, since Mommy had to go,
And would he please take care of her, and that he loved her so.

He slowly slipped to dreamland and was there until the dawn,
The sound of church bells ringing as the Christmas day was born.
His weary eyes were opened as he slowly turned his head,
Then as he rose he noticed something left upon his bed.

It wasn't something that was lying there the night before,
His name upon this envelope, but what he wasn't sure.
Something his Mom had left for him was written in this note,
As once again, his tears did build, he read the words she wrote...

PLEASE DO NOT BE SAD FOR ME, AND JUST GIVE ME A THOUGHT,
JUST LET ME SHARE IN WHAT YOU CHOOSE, OR SOMETHING THAT YOU BOUGHT.
EACH TIME THAT YOU ARE HAPPY, OR YOU WISH UPON THAT STAR,
I ALWAYS WILL BE WITH YOU, FOR I'M RIGHT THERE WHERE YOU ARE.
AND EVERY PLACE YOU GO TO, I WILL GO THERE WITH A SMILE,
I'LL FOLLOW CLOSE BEHIND YOU AND WALK WITH YOU EVERY MILE.
ALTHOUGH YOU CANNOT SEE ME, I AM ALWAY'S WATCHING YOU,
TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE THE BEST OF EVERYTHING YOU DO.
FOR ALL THE LOVE I HAVE FOR YOU, AND ALL THE LOVE WE SHARE,
I ALWAYS WILL BE PART OF YOU, IN KNOWING THAT YOU CARE,
FOR ALL THE THINGS YOU MEAN TO ME, AND ALL THE TEAR'S YOU'VE CRIED,
WILL KEEP US CLOSE TOGETHER AS I STAY HERE BY YOUR SIDE.

Some years have passed since then, and so much older he has grown,
He still looks at the letter, everytime he feels alone,
Sometimes he still remembers, yet no longer does he grieve,
For never will he loose the love that came on Christmas Eve.
