It Was Christmas Time Virginia Salter it was Christmas time Grandma was coming for a visit to our wonderful home in the country the home where Mom hatched the chicks in the oven an earwig attacked the end of my brother’s thumb a bumble bee stung him on the bum well really, it was on his head but, alas, not as funny bee-catching, Mason jars, ice-pick holes in mayonnaise lids it was back when we were kids Santa promised to be coming when Grandma and we fell fast asleep he’d come down our stove-pipe chimney into living room he’d creep so to slumber was our charge before the night got older soon you’ll learn why Grandmama hoped it’d be a little colder off to bed we three did go my brother, Grandma and me to dream of presents, Christmas bows with Grandma sleeping in between “Grandma, Grandma! In the middle! for we love you with all our hearts Grandma, Grandma! In the middle! just like you were, at the start! snuggle up, each side of love cuddling Grandma, head to toe with our dreams and lovely visions for in the middle she did go snoozing, snoring serenaded till our sleep did overcome then with a start, silence broken “Come on, Grandma; that’s no fun!” “In the middle, in the middle, for we love you, Grandma, dear! “Okay, okay, my loving lambkins! Now, go to sleep, dear Santa’s near! © December 7, 2000 |
