A Firefighter's Observation I am still in awe, even now, after the event is past; The clarity of insightful understanding, a true epiphany. From the first tone of voice, the adrenaline surge, The headlong rush to the station of each other's arms The frenzied change of clothes and back out on the road Blood pounding in our ears…. To make the scene of passion's inferno, The heat, the light, the smells, the almost insane confusion As our whole universe spirals down To that one bright focal point in the night. The unmistakable hiss as the lips of fire meet ice In an ages old dance that welds the two into one. With passions extinguished, the long exhausted return To the station of sanity and the comfort of a warm bed, Ever willing to do it all again, at a moments notice…. |

INclan, Excellent portrayal and insight into the lives and dedication of the courageous firefighters who put their lives on the line to rescue others and to prevent further damage to the areas adjacent to the fire scene. your poems are always based on your personal observation so i assume you are a firefighter in real life? if so, thanx for sharing something thats apparently important to you... i ditto dennis..this was a fine insight into the life of a firefighter....thanx for the read and this line stood out for me "In an ages old dance that welds the two into one" [This message has been edited by kaile (edited 12-05-2000).] |

I say this with all sincerity, firefighters have to be the bravest human beings on the planet. To walk straight into a roaring fire, it amazes and humbles me that there are people who can do this. Thanks for the poem, and for the work you do, if you are a firefighter. Sandra |

First, thank you all for your kind responses. SEA, Yes, I did intend to play with words! Dennis, Yes, I am a firefighter with a volunteer department. I would be glad to give you a ride. On the night in question, I didn't ride....I drove a tanker. Kaile, You are quite correct. True-life is my best inspiration. I figure that way, at least, I know about what I write. Sandra, Thank you for your praise. It might interest you to know that DRIVING TO the fire kills more firefighters than fire itself. We train a great deal to prepare for the scene, but the roads are more dangerous. Oh, BTW, we CRAWL (not walk) into a fire. Paula, Thank you very much. I was touched by the similarity of the two events. I was awe struck by the passion displayed during a fire response. Passion as intense as the fire itself. The other?
