THE SILVER SPOON

Imagine..
now I do
how many mouths
have licked this silver spoon
this very spoon now tarnished dark
which was handed down
from matriarh to matriarch
through the years..

Guessing..
I often do
how many bowls of thin
'depression soup'
it sadly scooped and scooped
then preciously was washed and dried
and put away till needed
once again..

Envision..
if you can
all the babies grasping tight
its slender handle in their hands
while creamy oatmeal spilled
from its rim as they
giggled with delight..

Picture..
if you will
how many dainty cups of tea it
stirred on cold New England days
or how many times it fed elixer to
fevered children holding noses
through all those distant
yesterdays..

Remembering..
now I do
the morning after Grandma's funeral
how Mama looked at it and cried
then polished it with heartfelt pride
and handed it to me, so that
on some destined tomorrow
I'll be handing it
to you..

I sing my tearful song which has charms only for me."

This is wonderful...we all have those spoons and silver cups that will be passed down to our grandchildren..and will eventually become tarnished again..loved it..
