It stuck me
as queer
that people would be
more engrossed
in everything else-
reading the papers,
playing their Game Boys,
typing out SMS messages
on their handphones,
looking dully at their laps

than in
the people around them

i wondered

Have we gone numb
in this aggressive
competitive world
so much so that

our fellow man

no longer interests us?

No one seems to want to take an interest... except here...they'd rather rot in the spaces of their own mind....very pointed question you've written here...I enjoyed the thought... ethome

Kaile,
You have witnessed the new isolationism in this day of mass communication, what a parodox! Keen eye my friend!

Kaile, perhaps it is not so much that people are uninterested as that they are afraid.  It is safer to be isolated, so people cannot touch you and hurt you.  Just a thought.

To love another person is to see the face of God.

Well..you've just echoed my thoughts exactly. Actually - I have a theory about this...

I call it 'Busworld safety' - in your case it would be 'Subway safety'...
kcsgrandma summed it up.

It's fear and isolation.
People pocket themselves away on the bus...no one can talk too loud...or look at other people...and you certainly don't want to infringe on that...

help if you do!

Glares...and sniffs - almost as if you are harrassing them...

It's solely a societal reaction to the pressures and expectations that socialise us.

And very interesting to watch...

Good poem - I like it...

Very true, its hard to know what people are thinking. Just want to talk sometimes but people are so unoutward, cocooned in their habits and routines..its quite strange, people never used to be as much like that i don't think, but more and more you find people so shelled up when their out in the public atmosphere...enjoyed this..

take care

As a people loving people watcher, I more than appreciated this...and I too, talk to anybody and everybody...sure it gets me in a bind sometimes, but I have also made many many friends!!! Nice work and thought provoking!

This is quite true. People just seem to move around in a mad dash for time. But don't you know that staring is rude? When I take the subway, and I've nothing to keep me occupied, I'll look outside, or at the reflection on the glass. Then, I could look at people, without actually staring at them   Wicked, aren't I? hehe
