Twas the Night Before Christmas (an adaptation)
Virginia Salter

twas the night before Christmas and all through the stable
not a rat was found stirring why not even Mable

the straw was all matted the hay was done sneezing
the mare in the corner had ceased all her wheezing

the donkey, the calf and the sheep in the pen
were snoring their snores as the winter blew in

above the pine doors there were garlands of apples
to treat all the horses, yes, even the dapples

the cat had curled up in the corner to dream
and Dog, he was whistling a nasal air stream

aglow in the meadow ‘top new fallen snow
was starlight and moonlight beginning the show

away in the east one could hear hoof steps clomp
plodding a path with each diligent tromp

laboring steps did companion the sounds
as they drew ever closer across the white ground

nearer and nearer those echoes did come
until they had settled within stable’s hum

then split was the night with a cry from a Babe
and glorious streams floated o’er where He lay

bright was the night the silence succumbed
to the greatest rejoicing that ever had come

sheep were a-bleating shepherds were merry
the heavens were filled with all they could carry

that night is now treasured more than any we know
an awesome, exciting and wonderful show
