I always wondered how he got in,
We didn't have a chimney and we were always sure to lock the doors and windows at night,
Christmas eve still holds a sense of magic in my mind,
I remember sitting up waiting to hear him come,
Maybe I'd hear sleigh bells,
Perhaps see him fly acrossed the sky,
I always fell asleep before he arrived!

Falling asleep was always next to immpossible on that night,
I gave it my best shot yet it still seemed to take forever,
I'd tell myself, "The sooner I fall asleep the sooner tommorrow will come,"
It never helped!

Christmas Eve of 1987 I was five years old,
We were at my grandma's house and I was in her bed,
Just as entered the realm between sleep and trying to sleep I heard it,
Was that sleighbells?
Could that be hooves in the driveway?
YES that WAS the front door creaking open!!!

I ran from room to room just to see where everyone was,
Everybody was in there beds and all was accounted for,
I dashed back to my grandma's bed and peered out the window,
A SLEIGH!
REINDEER!
I crept quietly down the stairs and into the living room,
SANTA!
It's really him!

Of course years later I discovered it was all set up by my mom,
She figured after five years of waiting that I deserved a glimpse of what made christmas so magical to me,
I still catch myself listening and waiting for him from time to time,
Who says the magic has to die?

To decide to have a child is to accept to forever have your heart go walking around outside of your body

Neat write!  And I still believe in the Easter Bunnies, too. And I STILL know Santa is real...no matter what my mom and dad say!
