When bad dreams come to steal my sleep,
And the night drags slowly to the dawn,
I think of every wish I've made,
Since the day that I was born.

One wish hovers above my head,
Like some spectral sword of Damocles,
It is the wish of joy, and this I must fulfil,
To place the sword back in its sheath.

Desire can lead a man to ruin,
And no one knows that more than me,
But for that flower called happiness,
I wish I could devour it, like a bee.

To taste its sweet nectar of delight,
And to satiate this bitter ache,
That howls in me,like the wind at night,
That I hear when forced to lie awake.

Water never so refreshed man,
Who traversed the desert, dying of thirst,
For to know the true meaning of ecstasy,
One must have felt the wounds of agony first.

And I've paid my dues in sorrow's barren lands,
Ploughing eviscerated soil,
Acquiescent to fate's fickle hand,
Yet weary of this mortal coil.

Time wears no sign, nor has a voice,
And we are not puppets pulled by strings,
But are we led by fate, without our choice,
Never knowing what tomorrow brings?

Though I can see no equilibrium,
Life's illusions cloud my sight,
Only a seer can look beyond the veil,
To view the eternal human plight.

And so I'll live, waiting for that day,
For a taste of honey, however small,
It would be my greatest victory,
Just to ever taste it at all.  < !signature-->

Tony--Everyone yearns so for joy and happiness, yet I have found that the troubled times of tears are the ones that bring me the most wisdom..and with this comes happiness.  I enjoyed your poem, by the way..sorry to yak yak away...

"One wish hovers above my head,
Like some spectral sword of Damocles,
It is the wish of joy, and this I must fulfil,
To place the sword back in its sheath."

I like the vision-allusion in these lines. And your poem altogether is an excellent write.  Nicely done.

"There is pleasure in the pathless woods
there is rapture on the lonely shore
there is society where none intrudes
by the deep sea, and music in its roar
I love not man the less but nature more"

Tony...some wishes are just never meant to be...but everyone should have joy and happiness in their lives...I loved the whole poem but especially the last line...Just to ever taste it at all

flow of this was perfection and the last

piece...excellent writing~

*sigh* how true this is, dear one. One must taste the bitter to treasure the sweet. This was beautiful to read for I too dream of joy. Much love to you from me.

Love I leave with you my friend whether it be in your life or of yet the essense of your dreams. http://path2riches.com

Marvelous read, Tony!  Do do a wonderful job with fresh phrases.

The way you describe being sleepless and the following are my favorite parts of this poem:

For to know the true meaning of ecstasy,
One must have felt the wounds of agony first.
