As You Are to Me
Virginia Salter

you whisper your presence
across the pages of my life
gently caress the sinew of my spirit
with words that becalm
and uplift

could that I
be so to you
in a day
in an hour
in a moment in time

you moisten
as with dew drops
the tears in my eyes
that spill out from joy overflowing
as a river in the ebb of its tide
giving life at land’s edge

would there be,
oh, could there be,
one element of me
that might impart
the tiniest of substance
a moment of glee
that would freshen
the heartbeat
that exists
within thee

would that I be
an iota of blessing
as you are to me
