small plate of teacup memories

it didn't begin when we were small
but had we met then
it would have

and there is a plate alongside my wall
that pictures us, just so

you the brunette
me, the blonde

kittens in laps and teacup memories
of pretend and dress up
lace and frilly dresses
secrets shared
pinked cheeked smiling faces

you
and
me

we didn't start our memories then
we waited until after high school
we were acquaintances
that became friends

long after the halls of study
were left behind

you came hundreds of miles to attend
my wedding
wished me the best
and a kinship was born

hundreds of miles have never
kept us from talking, frequently or
otherwise…

always there

the phone will ring, and we will
pick up the conversation of yesterday
and carry it on through tomorrow

always there

there will never be a time that you
will not be there for me
or I for you…

you helped me walk through the
divorce after cheering the births
of two little girls

always there

I walked you through the heartbreaks
of relationships, hoping someday
you would find "the one" but quietly
reveling in your independence

always there

you will be forever the brunette
I shall be the blonde

then I remarried and you changed
your name not once, but twice
first once again, independently
then once again, in marriage

always there

when I saw the plate, your name
came to mind
how we would have been forever friends
as children
how we will be forever friends
as matrons

for we passed our lives in decades
together, apart
always stepping in time
you going your way
I going mine
together, apart

coming together to think how it might
have been,
had we been children in kind
sharing our laps with kittens
and clinking teacups in make-believe
wearing frilly dresses [we were never ones for
frilly dresses, but they are so pretty, and we've
always appreciated pretty]

and now you are an artist of jewelry
and I am a rambler in words

thus you dress the ladies in pretty
as I sometimes feed souls in poetry

and we attempt to walk in like and kind
kindly liking what we do
finding ourselves, newly molded
going forward to see what the fifth
decade will hold
holding strong

the plate has been shared between us
now for a few years
I wonder where yours sits?
mine dwells in a room
fondly called "antique"
because the chimera of the little
girls in lace with laps of kittens
and teacups sharing memories

one blonde
one brunette

belongs there, where I can see it always
and always smile at the thoughts
that are still to be had between us
as the decades slide beneath our feet
for the smiles that we shall share
between us, and with others
that come our way

and now, you will live somewhere
in immortality

for I have cast you and woven you into
a memory of caring

as I have shared my heart with you
now I share you in passionate recollection

and salute you, my friend,
with a teacup memory

                                dedicated to Yvonne

Kari, I'm clapping my hands with delight, (makes it a bit difficult to type, but what the heck   ) Another pure gem of friendship you've penned, an absolutely beauty, such craft, and such style. Feed my soul with poetry you most certainly do. The pair of you are very lucky to have each other, my mam, always used to say that friends are far more precious than anything else. Things can be replaced, but friends never can.
I love this one I really do.
Take care

Marge, I have missed you!...I would send to you this plate...you would then understand the feeling of sisterly love I have for her...and for you...she is you, and I miss her...hugs to you both

Denise, a few words...write more...respond less...let the rest of us catch up with you...

all seriousness aside, thank you!  She is indeed, a most wonderful friend...

I see a lot of her in you...except for the color of hair....then, you are like me...

I wish I could write more, Karilea. I seem to be in a desert with no oasis in sight, not even a mirage...*sigh*...but thanks for your kind words!

the fair sex shares unique bonds - we males may never realize - the closest we come - is with our mate - I've beer mug buddies - and a bond with a poetic friend - but somehow - it doesn't come close to what you've written of here - very beautiful

Sunshine,

What a perfect portrait of true friends you have painted.  Lovely.  We should all be blessed to have such a friend.
