My days were spent in fantasy-
The nights were spent in tears.
I dreamed my Dad would care for me,
The months turned into years.

I grew up, then I moved away-
My brother stayed behind...
The fact that Daddy loved him most
Weighed heavy on my mind.

I told myself I didn’t care-
I’d make it on my own.
I had no need for kith or kin,
I know, now, I was wrong.

The bitterness consumed me-
Made me angry, filled with hate.
Age and health have changed my Dad,
Alas, it’s far too late.

Standing by his bed last week-
I saw it in his eyes...
A loneliness, a misery
Too late we realize...

The things that we have thrown away
The bridges we have burned.
I’m sure that now we both regret
The lessons never learned.

So parents love your children,
Be sure to give them time,
Out of your busy schedule.
I believe that you will find...

The beds we make while we are young-
We’ll lie in when we’re old...
Our children learn to love from us.
Wax warm instead of cold.

gunslinger this really hits close to home...I had a very strained relationship with my father and I never thought he loved me and a few times I thought maybe he did and something would happen to change my opinion...years later I finally figured out it was just as much my problem as his...he passed away while I was in the service in Germany and we never made up...time does wait for no one...James

This is very sad, John. Some parents don't realize the damage they do by having 'favorites'. I'll never understand it how a parent can favor one over the other...or, if they do, why they make it known that they do. The hurt and pain never go away for the least favored ones. Very sad.
