( Many of you will remember the baby that I asked for prayers for...the grandaughter of one of my employees in my flower shop family.  I am reposting two of my poems written for baby Andrea, born at 6 months, weighing 2 1/2 pounds...your prayers got her through to 5 pounds.  She is still in the hospital and has started having seizures...the doctors are running tests to see what is causing them...I am asking for your prayers again...her family was so appreciative, as was I)

A Prayer for Life

Life is so fragile,
its delicate arm is made of velvet
and it breaths in muted cords
fluttering with the harp
cascading notes like questions
into the small space that comforts.

Nestled in a cocoon of softest flannel
I touched it today with a finger
oh so large and callused
and not nearly clean enough from scrub
to disinfect the longing that her skin absorbed
or to sponge the fabric of tears that tore me

back into another room with more tubes
and breath a machine that pulled and pushed
when all around said stop
and let the spirit that is rising go.

In that soft fingertip of love
I held my heart and prayed again
for it has been so long in coming,
so long since I prayed for life

I pray now.
****

That Miracle

I have been around this wonder
many times, thinking,
thinking of how fragile
a window life is and someone walking
across the glass of it
tip toes with velvet slippers
or stomps in boots that break
and cause stormy shards of glass,
and the sound is the same,
the tinkle of life
the soft muted step
that reflects the moon
and that is held by
so many sharp stones,
it is the same.

It seems that just a twist
this way wrong or that way right
would send it all
falling falling,
sliding into some deep abyss
where things go that try too hard,
or sailing across the sky
flung like a Frisbee
to fall again and bounce
maybe up against some wisdom
that has been sitting there in the grass
arms resting behind head
and just the trace of a smile
waiting.

While, a baby can be born,
it can be the size of a telephone
its heart beating like a frenzied
ticking clock
and to touch it softly enough
is impossible,
but touch is what it needs
and so we touch it with our big love
and send prayers for it
that echo all around the tiny incubator
that hums and breaths its necessary rhythm
and life just is,
it trembles so and sighs
and takes one more breath
and lives

and that, my friends,
that miracle just makes me smile

Yes, thank you for the update, and another beautiful, fragile poem to match a beautiful, fragile little girl's life - and yes, I'll continue to pray for her, and all who love her.

Martie-
I cannot remember reading something that you've posted that did not touch my heart in the few months that I've been here. But Andrea has a most special place - and as I offered my prayers this morning - I also asked God to hear my prayer to remind me -
That the life He gives is precious -
That I want Him to continue to hear this prayer - continuously -
That we all need to remember that this above all - is His most precious gift to us.

Martie, you know that my prayers will be there and so will the prayers of all that I can tell about this.  Hold tight to the love my friend because that is the heart and the soul of a prayer as it is something that we can all truely believe in.  Also, remember, this is the best season of all for all those special miracles from the hand of God.  Love and hugs to you and all those in her family.

Martie, you never have to ask for my prayers, just point me in the right direction with a gentle nudge, and I'll be there for you...and yours...

Thank you all again for your continued support...The doctors have been unable to find much from the brain scan...they say her brain is small, not unusual for a preemy and that there is fluid around it..I get my information from the family who is comfused about what the doctors are telling them, so I'm not sure if fluid is normal or not.  The good news is that she now weighs 6 pds...She is still in the hospital and they are doing more tests to try and find out the reason for the seizures.  I'll keep you posted when I have more news....Hugs to you all..and may you all have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving.
