Her arms embraced a ruby bloom;
sweet the blood she licked away,
now a thistle takes the place
where her arm once flexed.
Its season prolonged by
rusty awning drops
collected under phases
of the moon.

She used to have a head
full of platinum blonde tresses
til red clay under tread of bike wheels
dyed them.
Auburn suits her skin tone now,
a pasty wool as the weather fades.

"Maa Maa" she used to intone
when I flexed her joints,
louder when I twisted her knees.
I wanted her to dance,
not caring her blinking protests.
She was my princess and could
do anything I imagined.

She used to be my confidante
back when she had a good head.
She retained my fantasies of the boy
next door who toted acne cream
in his hip pocket.
I was confident she wouldn't
tell because I never saw her lips
move.

She leans against the corner
of the old detached garage.
Plastic eyes,
one wide open, the other dull
behind curled lashes, some missing.
I can see her though.

My mom saved just about everything from my/my brothers' childhood....from music box, doll and rock collections to report cards, scouting uniforms, even artwork made in elementary school. Some might call her a pack rack but I'm grateful she held on to the memories and in turn passed them on to us.

I'm still trying to pull myself out of my childhood and drag it with me at the same time.  Memories can certainly be that alleged fountain of youth.

thanks for the wonderful read
