One  Came  Home  for  Christmas
~~~
An  eerie  silence  gripped  the  hour
no  slightest  sound  was  heard
So  many  thousands  crammed  the  boats
and  nary  a  one  was  coward
They  waited  there  in  silence
their  thoughts  were  never  shared
Then  a  crackle  o'er  the  wireless
and  a  thousand  engines  roared
~
The  landing  craft  were  under  way
the  waves  were  pounding  hard
the  foam  sprayed  o'er  the  gunnel
engulfed  them  like  a  shard
The  air  soon  filled  with  mortar  blasts
as  ears  near  burst  their  seams
" Ready  Now "  was  shouted  loud
a  blast  was  mixed  with  screams
~
The  sea  foam  held  a  reddish  tinge
an  odor  bit  the  air
Some  screamed  out  their  battle  cry
while  others  just  a  prayer
The  first  few  ripped  to  pieces
one  step  was  all  they  took
The  rest  climbed  over  what  was  left
without  a  second  look
~
Five  young  friends  with  right  hands  raised
were  going  to  save  the  world
Two  died  before  they  left  the  boat
One  drown  in  the  water
One  listed ... Missing  in  Action
The  last
stepped  on  a  land  mine
Several  months  to  recover
from  the  loss  of  his  leg
~
He  made  it  home  for  Christmas
~
Lest  we  forget ...
~~~

Rex* It's so nice to see you back here...I
was beginning to think I would have to send
out the search party for you too
This is excellent...your poetry speaks to so
many emotions and helps to make the big
picture so much clearer..you have a gift my
friend and you share it with those who read
your work.  Thank you for allowing me to be
among them~

Too many forget those who gave their lives so we can sit here reading and writing without fear...BRAVO to you Rex for making us remember...BRAVO to those who choose to serve, to fight and to die when asked...

What an excellent tribute of remembrance Rex. So many emotions pour through these lines of those who were lost, incredible imagery. Thank you for sharing this wonderful verse ... lest "we" forget. Beautifully written!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Applauding you, saluting them...

well done, Sir!

If I whisper, will you listen?...
I would rather be silent and write, then speak loudly and be bound.

Thank you for remembering the ones who never made it home. For the one who did may he know that some of us say Thank You.

Rex~
A moving tribute.

I'm moved to remind us of the words of a song -

'All gave some - some gave all'
Billy Ray Cyrus

We will gather to remember them all.
Thank you for this reminder of those who
gave more so that we could be here to remember.
Bless you for this.

Thanks everyone, for the kind words ... I guess the least I could do for the millions who died for freedom, was to remember their sacrifice in a humble poem of thanks
