I captured a fly with my hand.
A quick scoop and he was imprisoned.
I felt the tickle of his legs on my palm,
As he scurried in the darkness of his entrapment.
I heard the buzz of his tiny wings,
As he feverishly searched for an exit.
I thought for a moment,
What a superior being am I.
A simple squeeze would show that.
Yet I opened a window,
Opened my hand to set him free.
But the fly did not leave.
Maybe dazed, not believing his luck,
He sat there upon my palm.
Not believing his freedom lay before him,
He sat upon my palm.
Then he did wonderful things.
I watched him clean his wings,
With tiny animated legs.
Wash his face, so carefully, so thoroughly.
Then he turned his head from side to side,
Maybe a nod, an acknowledgment, a thank you,
For sparing his life.
I smiled.
A soft blow from my lips sent him onwards.
I thought for a moment,
Maybe the fly was the superior being,
Letting me realize,
Who am I,
To decide what lives and what dies?

Ron-
   wow...i love this!
i'm one of those people who
   everyone else thinks is nuts
   because i can't bring myself
   to kill a bug...lol.  i just
figure they have as much right
to be here as i do...and if they
   don't hurt me, i won't hurt them.
   anyway...this struck a chord with
   me.    enjoyed it much.

Wow. This was profound...

I confess to being a bug-squisher - I will look at the pests a bit differently now...
