Who Does She Make You Think Of

She puts words into a
clever patter
tappity tappity tap
her lines sometimes rhyme
regardless, she knows where
she’s at
her mind at work
constantly a hum
d-rum d-rum d-rum
and in this solitude of minor chord
a major song explodes
the rhythm flung in open dischord
as if in some mystic code

and pens the words
before her thoughts implode

and yet we don’t see
the innermost workings of this mind
she hides it so cleverly
when she rhymes
but when she sits and
tappity-taps
we wonder to ourselves
where she’s at
for these adventures
she takes us on in her journey
leaves us refreshed
or leaves us yearning
to know more, or at the least
to talk like that
to do it like Doreen
when she tappity-taps
away her beasts

and recently it came to mind
this singular way in
which she unwinds
for it reminded me
of a singular man
whom, with music,
does what he can
for he has this very way, too
of making us tappity-tap
our shoes
to the rhythm of his beat
and there was a time
I thought
no one could compete
with this wonderful man,
this singing and rhyming
of that soul-catcher
our own Paul Simon.

But Doreen can.

moi???

karilea.... i'm speechless and more honored than any words can say. Paul Simon is probably my favorite lyricist... right up there in the top 3 anyway... and to make reference to my writing associated with him is an honor i will never ever forget ... DAMN! ME???? lol... i laugh, because i'm nervous about the implications... how could i ever live up to this...

thank you, poet friend... you're a wonderful person to write something like this dedicated to me and i don't know what else to say but thank you

((((hug)))) ~doreen

A lovely tribute that would make anyone proud to call you "friend."  *s*

A lofty tribute, to be sure, but one, I think to be fitting.  Well written and well said.

What DOESN'T Doreen make me think of?

That is what is most amazing, you start somewhere with her, and quite unexpectedly end up in The Land of Oz....or vice versa...most amazing lady poet...and a nice tribute...if this is Passions Sisterhood week, I'm loving it...LOL

Sometimes... well maybe occasionally... I feel the teeniest tinyest twinge of guilt - because I know Doreen and her family well enough to be able to put faces and personalities into her work... She's a rare gem, indeed... Nice tribute, Sun...

I want to thank everyone who came in to read...it is amazing how personalities reach through the wires and attach themselves to us who take the time to really read each other's works.  I knew Doreen had been reminding me of someone's "work", that being, Paul Simon...that mesmerizing way of talk/sing...

sometimes, some of you are just born talented...

and it's our fortune to know you...

I can think of no poet in these hallowed halls I consider more deserving of this tribute (some of equal but different talent to be sure) Unquestionably - she is one of at least 4 I NEVER fail to read and one I ALWAYS ENJOY.
In the past 15-20 years I've struggled with a better understanding and sensitivity to the female psyche - She is one of a still smaller circle that improves my insight.
What more can I say but to acknowledge your poem with applause.
(thinking of writing a couple more for my other favorites   )

What does Doreen make me think of? That's easy..clear skies and stormy days, Mozart and Pink Floyd, stability and chaos..Doreen is all these things and more..she is the woman you've always known but will never know and she will show you as much as she wants to. Her poetry is real...nothing contrived or phoney...shooting straight from the hip in the same way she lives her life..and the style is all hers. She is a woman of strong character and ideals with a love for life that I find unequalled and it is all reflected in her poetry. Others may write a poem and say "it's just a poem". When Doreen writes a poem, it is her life. This is a wonderful thing you have done, Sunshine. She is well deserving of the praise even though she will say she is "just Doreen". Her poetry has made a lasting impression on how I view life. I have loved her work from the beginning and always will.  May the poetry never stop.....

thank you... all of you... all your kind words mean so much more than i can say in text... if i could reach through the screen, i'd hug each and every one of you.... (of course, i might hug tighter for some... lol... hehe *wink*)... you poetpeople are incredibly generous and kind.... i am honored and now i have to figure out how to write something with a simon edge.... something about strobe lights, i think

karilea, again... my heartfelt appreciation.. you are too sweet

i love you ...all!

oh, and btw, i saw paul simon in concert with bob dylan last year... excellent concert!!!... there's a poem in there, too, and i should write it.. it was the day i looked at my ex-husband and finally realized i had no idea who he was and didn't want to know... just a little flash of a strobe... you'll see *g

Temptress, Martie, thank you.  I've this great CD of Paul Simon's with African music as the main theme and when I was going to lunch the other day [stereo in car was WAY up...the beat was terrific...] all of a sudden, doreen's image came to mind...and that was all she [me] wrote...LOL...
