** my first real attempt at free verse ...
a special thank you to Martie ...
whos amazing gift of writing in this style
inspires me to wish to attempt it.
I hope to someday write it with the grace ...
that her and the other gifted poets who master this form do so very well.
Miles to go before I sleep ... I know ...
but that is the gift of inspiration when found in anothers talents
===================

~Upon Finding Purpose~

I saw him standing there at the fray,
in the gray edges just outside the shadows.
From the first moment I laid eyes on him ...
I knew he was special ... gifted ... wounded.
There was a certain frailty about him,
as if someone would speak too loudly ...
he would slip back into the darkness.
And then there were those eyes ...
all knowing, piercing, jaded, emerald sparks.
He could look right thru you ...
or see behind your deepest, hidden layer.
You could not witness him ...
and not witness his light ... his glow.
And I ... like they ... was drawn to the flame.
Some came closer out of fear of the unknown,
some in curiosity, some out of fascination.
I was drawn out of need,
need of things I didn't even yet understand,
of things I had yet to discover with in myself.
There were no awkward first moments,
there was an immediate connection ...
conduit, magnetism, absorption.
He was the silver, etched, moon that pulled all my tides,
he was the whispered changing of my seasons.
For a too few precious months ...
all my orange-glow suns --
rose and set in him.
He was a poet, prophet, an empyrean,
he was innocence taken too soon.
A scarred child, a wounded dove,
he was a lesson in forgiveness.
In patience, understanding, acceptance ...
most of all in the trust found in unconditional love.
To this day I'm not sure if I found him,
or he found me ...
yet I know fate found us.
Once he touched down,
he landed in my heart ... quietly slipped inside my soul.
Both of which were aching with unrequitedness ...  of vacancy ...
from then on nothing was ever the same ...
nor will ever be again.
For within those moments infinite,
he flowed thru me and looked out thru my eyes ...
granting me vision, clarity, perspective.
No one had ever needed me like that before,
Until then I never knew ...
I needed someone ... to need me ... like that.
By him ... of him ... with him ...
I now had reason.
He gave me purpose ...
then he gave me back poetry.

He left on the same echo of light that delivered him,
on the eve of the new millennium ...
when all was renewed and reborn in hope.
And in that dance of anticipation,
he was at last carried home.
Finally free of the past that often owned him.
He took a part of me with him,
but more so, he left a part of him with me.
So I no longer look for reasons,
for it was in his grace that I found purpose.
With every word I write ...
his light burns brighter.
He is anticipation everlasting ...
he is every verse to be written.
The rhythm, the reason I rhyme,
He is my poetic justice ...
he is inspiration ... on high.
He is poetry ...
my reason, my purpose.

Janet Marie

and I felt ... fascination ...
though I knew you then ... just casually ...
then you slowly turned and smiled in my direction ...
and my heart gave me away"....

Glass Tiger

**************

for DeVante' ... for all the gifts of our time,
for encouraging me to start writing again ...
I will never again allow my voice in poetry to be lost from me ...
every word I write ... is because of you.
you are my love ... my light ... always ...

Oh my sweetest SS...you know how your words of this butterly touch my heart so deeply...my hands are shaking as I type due to the feeling that you evoke through your poetry with him...living, breathing, giving within your soul.  You carry him with you while you write like this...a style and a form that is not yours...not his but together a melding of butterfly kisses and angel wing hugs...I could read this over and over again and each time find a new line to draw my heart to skip a beat...

And then there were those eyes ...
all knowing, piercing, jaded, emerald sparks.
He could look right thru you ...
or see behind your deepest, hidden layer.

He was the silver, etched, moon that pulled all my tides,
he was the whispered changing of my seasons.

My goodness Jan....I've never seen anything like this in my life...such beauty and love flowed through your pen in this...I feel as though I've watched your life within him upon this page...Your heart sings in this and I hear it's melody floating to the heavens tonight....simply angelic~

yeah yeah yeah - In our male dominated world 98% of the people who worship a diety  use the masculine pronoun - You know if I'd attempted this, that line at the end would have been "She is poetry" and all the other pronouns changed as well....Enough teasing--
Janet - this is beautiful - and like others above me - I share the feelings you expressed
and can tell you honestly I could not have written it half so well

My sweet friend, you have penned not only your first free verse but I would say after reading ALL of your works that this one and this one alone stands in a class of itself.  The freedom you found in your words glows from your heart straight into your quill and onto the page.  You my friend were born for free verse and this proves it and now it is my turn to say to you....ya better watch out or someone(mainly a cowboy) may call you a "POET".  Superb line breaks, emotion, imagery, and flow.  "SUPERB" in every sense of the word.  CONGRATS!!!!  and hugs to you my friend.

my what do i say to THIS? this was phenoneminal...breathtaking. beauty and love echoed in every single line. you and he are as one when you write about him janet. and even though i never met him, i feel as though i have by knowing you. your gift is amazing and as far as writing in free verse, i think you do it eloquently. the finest words in Webster couldn't do this piece justice so i will end with by simply saying, this is poetic justice at its finest!

love ya,

Jan,

I am in absolute awe after reading this.  DeVante brings out such passion, emotion, and fire to your words.  He must have been an incredible teacher and you a very fast learner, because you are one of very few poets I know, who can express themselves like this.  I do so LOVE when he comes to visit us!!!

Perhaps we all owe him something.  The gift he has given you, has been in return given to us.  I know that I am forever grateful to him for that.  I said it once and I will say it again.........Heaven is a better place because of him.

Oh Janet Marie, my dear, sweet, wonderful friend. This poem is a shear work of art. I am sitting here in awe at the  beauty and wonder I feel, and I feel the love and passion and depth of your words in my soul. your first attempt at free verse sounds like you've been writing them all your life and i know why. Because your muse is your great love and he will always be your inspiration and with this you will always write extraordinary poetry. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of this, the most beautiful poem I have ever read. I love you, Ellie

I was so nervous trying something new..
your encouragement is so wonderful...
thank you becomes too little to say after awhile ...

Amy ... my goodness!!!!! ...thank you so much  sweetie ..
though TY seems like it wont do this beautiful reply justice ..
you are sunshine my dear.

Marina .. TY SO MUCH .. you humble and compliment me and touch me deeply
with this reply ... and with your acceptance of him...yes I do so love when he comes to visit too...*smile*  thank you so much for you high praise of my poetry my friend..
Coming from one with your talent... It means much to me.

Kathy ... thank you Hon ... truly..
what a wonderful thing to say!!!! Im very complimented.

Margie-girl ... thank you my all knowing poet,...yes.. he taught me so much...
and that line says it all.. your right. TY

Rosebud ... thank you for such a sweet and wonderful reply ...
yes he was indeed "clearly beautiful"  thanks again for all your replies to my work of late.

Kathleen ... thank you so much sweet poet.. yes I have to admit..
It was a "free feeling" to write without "needing the rhyme" ...
though that style of writing is still my first love and instinct. TY

Ellie .. I hardly know what to say to this touching sweet reply ... thank you so much..
you were one of the first people to read my work so long ago back in SJ and
you always celebrated and encouraged my need to write of him ...

for your amazing reply and compliment of this poem ...
I am at a loss for words and deeply touched

Eagle .. what a beautiful thing to say... thank you my gentle sweet friend.

Brigator ... you have always said he was my "real" muse ...

Lizzie ... thank you SO much sweet poet and friend ..
I do hope to write more of this style of poetry...It felt really "right" ...
I wish to learn more and grow in it ...
but like you.. I do so love the rhyme and structure...
its how I have always written ...
thank you for the wonderful praise and encouragement.

THANK YOU ALL
love you much
