In my dream they are having a picnic,
A young couple and two little boys,
The parents sit on a blanket,
The kids in the sand with their toys.
They are under a sturdy old chestnut tree,
On one limb there's a swing held by ropes,
The Mom and Dad look up to the sky,
As they talk of their dreams and their hopes.
Slowly details become clearer,
Their faces unknown to me,
Still, there is something familiar,
Who could this young family be?
In the morning while drinking my coffee,
That dream came again to my mind,
I've had it so often over the years,
There were answers I wanted to find.
So I went upstairs to the attic,
And found a chest I'd seen there before,
Inside was a box full of pictures,
Dated Nineteen Forty-four.
There was the lady in my dreams,
Holding a baby in her arms,
The man held the hand of the little boy,
Who was posing with boyish charms.
In another the two kids were older,
And the Mom held yet one more child,
A perfect family picture,
Looking so peaceful and mild.
One more album to go through,
And finally a fourth child appeared,
Now I knew who that family was,
At last, my mind had cleared.
My two oldest brothers and Mom and Dad,
As they looked before I was born,
No wonder I didn't recognize them,
They weren't yet so tired and worn.
Now they are all in their heavenly home,
And again they are young and carefree,
Assuring me they are still around,
As in dreams they come softly to me.

This is absolutely beautiful!  Our loved ones still speak to us, as long as we are willing to listen.

Take me as I am or watch me as I go

Hold on to those....they will be your memories and your connection to them for the rest of eternity....but mainly in your heart.  This is one tenderly emotional piece from you.  Well done!!!

This is a lovely warm dream of family love.
Now you have pictures plus a keepsake poem to go with them for future generations to enjoy

Bonnie I've heard it said when they enter your thoughts, they are the ones who put it there.  This was beautifully written!

What sweet dreams, and memories

What a beautiful poem...at moments like this I'm reminded of how much I would miss not reading poetry...an escape to dreamland while I'm awake
