Festoonery

Aunt May painted the cottage buttercup yellow
the day after Uncle Bob’s funeral,
after the cold cuts and guests were gone,
with one large brush and a ladder
in a pair of his overalls, pant legs cuffed.

Now, terra cotta pots overflow with marguerites,
in her garden - azaleas in place of early girls
and better boys. Bob had hated azaleas.

No more avocado appliances
or brown shag carpet,
frugal past white washed,
his gun collection donated
except the one under her bed,
just in case.

No somber hues of mourning,
Instead, a metamorphosis,
painted lady
discovering velocity
free to swing dance
on Saturday nights.

Good for Aunt May !

Love it!  All of it.  Wonderfully written. And really like the title too.

I needed a "Corinne" moment this morning and I found this!  I love the rich imagery and the expression. It shines.

over the rain-green grass,
and the sun drips honey.""
